WRESTLERS OPP
Grapplers Will Close Dual
Meet Season Monday Night
By SAL^SALA
With two meets in three days, the Lion wrestlers end their home dual
meet season tomorrow and Monday night when they grapple the matmen
from Syracuse and Harvard, respectively.. Thereafter, the Niittony grap
plers will not be seen in uetion on the local mats until March 25, when they
will be hosts to the National Collegiate A. A. tournament. '
At 7 o'clock tomorrow evening, Syracuse’s Orange-clad squad will offer
Charlie Spcidvl’s crew the opportunity of gaining its second victory of the
year without exceptional effort. The
Orange ‘teams was easily set down
by the strong Lehigh ■matnien, 29-8,
and then received a similar drubbing
from a much weaker Cornell squad,
24-8.
Tomorrow’s match will be the 16th
of a series begun in 1923 between
Syracuse and State, with the Orange
yet to win a meet. Lost year, the
Syracuse team halted the Lions’ shut
out streak of two meets by gaining a
draw, scoring 114 points to the Nit
tanyites’ 26%. The draw was scored
against Jack Light, whose undefeated
dual-meet record was almost- shatter
ed by the surprising Ken Becker.
FRESHMAN GRAPPLERS
MEET GEORGE SCHOOL
Seeking their first win of the sea
son, Bob Higgins' freshman ■wrestlers
will meet George School at Recreation
hall tomorrow afternoon at. 3:30 o'-
clock. The' Cubs lost their only meet
to Mercersburg two weeks ago, 18-I*l.
Instead of wrestling the 175-pound
and’unlimited classes, there will be
two 118-pound and two 155-pound
•matches. At 118 pounds, Ovcrholtz,
Ellison Kirkhufif, and Walbcrg arc
competing for the two postions, Leo
Horvath, who w'rcstled against
Mercersburg, will again fill the
120-pound post. Frank Gleason,
another veteran, will probably wrestle
at 135 pounds. Frank Ilorpel won a
close decision from Dave Wilson to
secure the 145-pound position. *ln the
155-pound division, Weir Lucas will
wrestle one match, and cither Lavern
Nelson or Frank Connelly, will wrestle
the other. Bill Bachman, brother of
varsity Don, who won his mutch
against Mercersburg in impressive
style, will again be the Cub 165-
poundcr.

Boxers Shifted
For Virginia Tilt
Donato Faces 145 Pound Star;
Schweitzer At 155; Cooper
Replaces Byrd At 115
By Tom boal
Two shifts in line-up are expected
for the Virginia meet -as the Lions
meet the .Cavaliers in the squared
ring for one of the toughest'meets of
the year. Sammy Donato, who has
fought 41U season at 155. pounds,, is
expected to get down to 145 pounds,
with Hank Schweitzer in for Sam,
while Mike Cooper will probably re
place injured Ken Byrd in the fly
weight class. *
Byrd, who sprained his. shoulder in
the Syrocusc fight, has not been prac
ticing this week. A new contender
for the 115-pound division is Bobby
Morris, one-time intramural 'champ
who. has just come out.
Another possible change in the
line-up may be the replacing of Nate
Handler by Tor Toretti in'the heavy
weight class. Toretti has shown
much, improvement in this week’s
practice and is rapidly learning the
technique of using his -lcft hand. .
Team . Much Improved
Despite the seemingly onesided
loss ’ at Syracuse/ ringside observers
have noticed a great change in the
“unknowns” for the better. More ac
curate timing, and improved jabbing
have been instrumental in raising
the hopes of the Nittany followers
for the-remaining meets.
The Cavaliers have tied Syracuse
4-4 and defeated North Carolina.
Their 145-poundcr is rated the best
in the Southern Conference. .
