"Truckin" " " "Peck
'—Mildred Bailey, Red Norvo's
buxom, blues singin' wife, can do
these gymnastic steps with the best
of them.
She proved this to the little group
that gathered behind scenes at Soph
Hop Friday night.
Mildred was feeling very fine for
one who had just traveled from Cle
veland over icy roads, and through
snow storms. Yep, the Mr. and Mrs.
of Swing and their band had to brave
such inclement weather conditions,
and it took them almost nine hours to
make the trip:
But, in spite of this "grind," Mrs.
Norvo was very congenial. She spoke
of her recent purchase of a ranch in
California, and of the time, which she
hopes will be soon, when she will be
able to retire to that sunny-clime re
treat.
She recalled the years she had
spent on the stage, especially proud
of the period she had been with Paul
Whiteman—and first became famous
as "the Rockin' Chair Lady."
The band . left Sunday for a week
in New York where they will make a
number of recordings, and then will
journey back this way and out to
Pittsburgh for a theatre performance
beginning Friday.
