Meet Lion Nine
Untsmen Bomb Army, 1-3, With
11-Hit Attack; Freshmen
To Encounter Kiski
Once upon a time they were called
the hitless wonders. But miracles hap
pen even in State College. Tomorrow
afternoon those Lion sluggers will
seek to stretch their one-game win-
I ning streak at the expense of a weak
opponent named Susquehanna. The
I.:or.i.'est will get under way Int 3
o'clock. The starting pitcher will not
be announced until game time.
Snapping out of the • doldrums,
State's batsmen came out of their
, trenches to crash out 11 hits and
'bomb the Army, 7-3, on the West
Point battlefield Wednesday. Benny
Simoncelli, who did all his work on
the firing line, failed to garner a
safety. Simoncelli yielded a half dozen
official hits in his six-inning stay, al
though no one knows where four of
the total conic from. Co-caption Frank
Smith, replaced the Lion southpaw as
a pinch hitter in the seventh, gave
one hit in the final three innings and
received credit for the victory.
The Lions dented the plate twice in
the third frame on a home run by
Johnny Waters, Harry Harrison's
walk, and a double by• Don Crossin,
who supplanted Hay Brake .in right
field. Army, however, went into the
lead in the fifth, scoring three runs on
a pair of walks, two hits, a fielder's
choice, two errors by Windy. Wear
and another by Harrison.
And so it went until Cadet Lip
comb, Army's best shooter, took the
hill in the eighth. Then the Lion at
tack began .to click. Crossin walked.
Sig Chief Rornick singled. Sol Mie
boil' missed fire with. a roller to the
box, but Mel Vonarx walked to load
the sacks. George Slabodian rapped
out a single to chase in Crossin and
Kornick. Waters bounded out, but
Smith punched out another single,
scoring Vonars,and Slabodian.
Planning to use the same lineup
that opened so successfully against
Mercersburg, Coach Leo Houck sent
his freshman charges through a short
workout Wednesday in preParation
for their game with Kiski at 11 o'clock
tomorrow morning. Bob Goodrich is
expected to be on the mound for the
Cubs. •
