Lion Trackmen Open
Season With Juniata
Chick Werner Will Hold Final Relay Try-outs;
State Favored in Ist Meet Today
Penn State's trackmen face a busy week-end, with both a dual meet with
Juniata and the final tryouts for the Penn Relays appearing on the schedule.
The Juniata meet will be run ofF this afternoon at 4 o'clock, while the try
outs will take place tomorrow at 2 o'clock.
'Little is known about the track team which Coach Mike Snyder will
bring up from Juniata College, but it is expected that State will win han
dily, even in view of the relatively.
poor performances turned .in last
Saturday in the peeliminary tryouts.
The final line-up for the Lions re
mained in doubt as Coach Chick Wer
ner saved several places for last min
ute entries: However, several . of the
men are sure of their positions.
Dave Bauer, Bernie Kalmanowiez;
and Hinkey Haines are sure to face
the starter's gun in the 100-yard
dash. Bauer will probably compete
in the 220-yard dash and both hurdle
races as well. Co-captain Howard
Downey will appear in: both the 220
and his favorite, the 490-yard run.
In this latter race, Downey will be
seeking to beat the college record of
48.3 seconds. Downey' has run the
diStance in the 47 second class twice,
but in neither case did he win the
race:
Adrian Markowitz and Chuck Mc-
Killips are also slated to appear. in
the 440 with 'Downey. Burt Aikman
is the only certain starter in the half
mile run. Pete Olexy will run in ei
ther the one-mile or the two-mile run,
probably the'one-mile. Charley Pierce
and Len Henderson will run in the
two-mile event.
Bauer; Jim Redmond, Greg Thomp
son, and Miller Frazier are the pos
sible participants fir the low and high
hurdles. ,Bob Clark is . a
sure bet in
the pole vault, and Redmond and Vic
Sandham will take care of the high
jump. " Clark almost cleared 13 feet
during practice .this past week. The
State record is only' 12 feet four
Niches.
Mike Brown, Tom Priolo, and Dean
Hanley will, bear the brunt of the
weight events.
Coach Werner also announced the
performances that must be made by
entries in the individual events at the
Penn Relays. Only those bettering
the following marks in the tryouts
tomorrow will be taken along to Phil
adelphia next week-end:
High jump, 6 feet; broad jump, 22
feet; pole vault, 12 feet 6 inches; dis
cus, 135 feet; and shot put, 45 feet.

Colgate Tomorrow
Reversing itself into a- powerful
scoring ten, the Penn State lacrosse
team scored its first victory of the
season over Swarthmore with a 9-
to-3 decision on Wednesday afternoon.
Staging a comeback after the sea
son's dismal opener with Harvard, the
stickmen are preparing for Colgate
on New Beaver field tomorrow after
noon at 1:30 o'clock.
It was a rough, hard-fought game
that was staged at Swarthmore as
the "Little Quaker" bowed to a team
that took full advantage of the
breaks. The Statemen showed their
mastery of blocking and passing after
working hard for a week to perfect
these techniques.
"Killer" Hoft, hard-playing lacros
ser, put State ahead in the first per
iod when he stepped in on the goalie
to drive one through. Hoft was sent
from the game on seven different
penalities. Al Simpson added a coun
ter in the second period after rushing
the ball down from his center position.
The Swarthmore team ' tried to
deadlock the score before the half,
but all of their attempts were blocked
by the stalwart State defenSe. Before
the end of the half, Captain Sam Hol
stein went through to make the score
' Sophomores Buser and Cookery
scored' in rapid succession to- put State
to their limit in scores during the
third. period. Swarthmore drew very
close to deadlocking the score in the
final minutes as White and Shroder
scored.

Simoneelli to Pitch
Slated to hurl today's contest is the
southpaw fireball artist, Benny Si
moncelli, who subdued George Wash
ington with an.eight-hit performance
in the season opener two weeks ago.
Co-captain Frank Smith, handicapped
by a sore arm, may be forced to wit
ness both games from the sidelines.
Should Smith fail to whip his arm
into shape, Coach Joe Bedenk will
send sophomore Joe Didinger to the
mound. Didinger chalked up four de
ciSions as a member of the freshman
team last season.
Only one other starting assignment
remained in doubt today. Either Don
Crossin or Ray Brake will start' in
right field, depending upon the West
Virginia mound choice. Bedenk ex
pects to use Croissin only against left
handed pitching. Sol Michell in left
and Joe Adessa in center will round
out the outfield.
Infield Remains Intact
The infield combination will remain
unchanged, with Wayne Vonarx at
first base, Windy Wear at second,
Harry Harrison at shortstop, and
Johnny Waters at third. Co-captain
Mike,,Kornick will be behind the plate.
