Frosh Boxers Thump
Pitt in 'Season Finals
Aided by two forfeits, a cut eye, al
close decision, and Nate Handler's im
pressive victory, Penn State's fresh
man boxers scored a 5 to 3 victory
over Pitt in Recreation hall Satur
day. It was the final meet of the sea
son for Coach Leo Houck's Lion Cubs.
Jack Jones and Des Shnkow won
the first two bouts for State by for
feit. Dan Deibler found the going
tough at 1:35 pounds with Toni Lynch,
of Pitt, until the Panther sustained a
cut over his left eye and the fight was
stopped in the second round with
Deibler the winner.
Two Nittany knockout artists •met
defeat when Bernie Sandson was
stopped by the slugging Jed Comic
of Pitt in the third round of their
1.15-pound clash, and Frank Silvestri
was hard hit at 155 pounds by Andy
Ventresca. Lloyd Ickez, wearing the
Blue and White for the first time,
was outpointed by Paul Ashman in
the 165-pound go.
Blocking and jabbing his opponent,
Stu Quidlly put the Lions ahead with
his decision victory at 175 pounds
over Steve Sikora. For the second
straight week, heavyweight Handler
looked good in bruising his opponent.
A hard counter right stopped the ag
gressive Dick Pennybaker repeatedly,
and Nate was awarded the decision.
