Lion Hamers Will Race Syracuse Tomorrow
Team Expects
Close Battle
With Orange
Pierce, Gordon Take
Firsts in Varsity,
Plebe Trials
By WOODROW BIERLY
Penn State’s cross-country teams
will compete, with the varsity and
freshmen of' Syracuse on New Bea
ver field tomorrow afternoon,' the
first-yeai* men running at 12:30 o’clock
while the varsity, coached by “Chick”
Werner, will be timed so that the
harriers will complete the course dur
ing the half of the football game. 7
Charles Pierce placed first in the
trials on Tuesday with a time of 27:42.
Ho was followed by Henderson with
a rate of 27:47; Clark, 27:51; Griest,
28:11; Olexy, 28:12 Wear, 28:28; Haz
ard 29:04; Aikman, 29:04, Greenburg,
31:00; and Patterson, 31:02. Captain
Downey did not run in the trials.
Gordon Leads Freshmen
Norm Gordon again placed first in
the freshman trials with a.16:27 pace.
Maule was second with a time of 16:-
51, followed by Galer, 17:08;’Miller,
17:31; Nipson, 17:50; Van Patten, 18:-
14; Yohn, 18:23; and Hostettler, 18:32.
Last year's meet with the Orange
was an easy victory for the Lions,
Book, Downey, Olexy, and Trimble ty
ing for first place with a time of 22:-
45 for the 4*/6-ir.ile course. The score
was 17-to-28, but from all indications
it won’t be a runaway tomorrow for
either squad.
. The Syracuse aggregation trampled
over Alfred and Colgate and so re
mains undefeated this year. Tom
Keane, Orange coach, has produced a
team that is supposed to be one of
the best that Syracuse has had in a
long time. Two of the best runners
are Charles Southard and Stan Ro
manoski who tied for first place in
their meet with Alfred with a time
of 27:36. They are both sophomores
and in the freshman intercollegiates
last year placed first and fourth res
pectively. Ed Crowder rates next best,
followed by Charles Rogers and Cap
tain Harry SentifF.
Won IC4A Four Time'
: Saturday’s meet should give some
hint as to the IC4A’s this year. Both
Syracuse and Penn State, as well as
Cornell won the intercollegiates four
times and one more title for any of
these teams -will give the winner the
cup.
The Lion freshmen, coached by Ray
Conger, will be meeting a stronger
team than they did at Cornell last
week. Among the Orange plebes is a
national 5000 meter champion, who is
expected to run here tomorrow.
In football games between Penn
State and Syracuse neither team has
ever won by more than two touch
downs.
