Parke Eshbaell, batting for Joe o'-
Dowd, in the heavyweight berth, gave
the customers a momentary thrill by
taking Crotty, much-touted Syracuse
heavy, to the mat in• the opening min
utes of the bout. After a while, how
ever, Crotty broke from under and
had things pretty much his own way
for the remainder of the match.
• Swimming
Victory he the.4Bo-yard relay gave
the varsity swimmers a victory over
the freshman team, but the efforts of
two stars of -the highly-tooted year
lings, Captain Charlie Welsh and Ken
Bunk, were almost enough to defeat
the regulars Saturday. The final
score was 41-to-30:
Welsh captured the 50 and 100-
yard sprint events while Bunk won
the 220 and 440-yard free-style con
tests. Captain Geiger won the back-
Stfoke, Burleigh the' brcaSt, and Bay
less "the s diving to score firsts for
varsity. ' The time of the relay was 5
minutes fent;kreaking the pool record.

Fencing
Dropping their first two meets of
the season, the Nittany Lien fencers
broke last year's record of victories
by dropping to Syracuse 9-to-8 Fri
day afternoon nt Syracuse and .fall
ing before the Cornell blademen 14-
to-3 Saturday at Ithaca.
Against Syracuse, the Lion foihnen
succeeded in taking five matches to
four for Orange swordsmen. Storrs
and Bowen starred in foil, taking two
out of their three matches. In epee,
the Lions won two and Mat two
matches and in sabre, they lost three
bouts and won one.
Repeating his fine performance at
Syracuse, Ed Bowen took two out of
his three foil matches against a fast
Cornell squad. Carl Bordhtin made
the only other team point by taking
one epee match.
Women in Sports
Mae Hall defeated Women's build
ing by a 21..t0-16 score when they
played off - their intrarhural game at
the Armory, Thursday night. Too bad
that Women's Building boasting such
players 'as. Flossie Taylor and Ruth
Linde (center) ' couldn't score a few
more points.• Well, the best man us
ually wins.
Gamma Phi Beta.forfeited the in
tramural basketball game they had
seheduled with Delta Gamma Thurs
day night. Although Delta Gamma'
. usually enters one of the best teams
this fact did not'frighten the Gamma
Phi's away. It was the cruelty of fate
travelling incognito as sickness that
compelled several of the Gamma Phi
girls to go to the infirmary so they
could not participate. Better luck
next time.
Too, too bild with the number of
women that there arc living . in
Grange that they could not scare up
enough girls to have a team for their
basketball , game scheduled with Kap
pa Kappa Gamma.
