Scholarships, Loans
Aid Worthy Students
Thirty-nine scholarships, in addi
tion to the State senatorial awards,
and eight loan funds of various
kinds are available for deserving
students in the College this year, ac
cording to the general catalogue.
Efforts are being made to distri
bute these funds to those students
who are most tdeserving. Each schol
arship is listed in the College cata
logue with the requisites for obtain
ing it. In additon, eleven prizes will
be awarded during the College year.
Information concerning any of
these awards is usually obtained from
the office of the. Dean of Men or the
Dean of Women. Applications, how
ever, have again exceeded the avail
able funds this year, according to the
reports.
Penn State Grad
To Coach at Yale
Ken Loeffler, former Penn State
basketball star, will be head coach of
Yale's court team next year, according
to an announcement from the Athletic
Board of Control at New Haven.
Loeffler was graduated from Penn
State in 1924 after a successful athlet
ic Career. He was a varsity baseball
player as well as a leading member of
the basketball team for the two sea
sons. The former Nittany athletic has
been head basketball coach at Geneva
College, Beaver Falls.

the recognition of scholarship in all
schools is Phi Kappa Phi, which was
established at Penn Stiite in 1900. To
become eligible for election a student
must be in the upper , twentieth of
his class on the basis of seven sem
esters and fulfill the further condi
tion that his average be at least 2.4.
Election takes place in the senior
year.
Membership in Pi Delta: Epsilon,
men's national fraternity, is given
for achievement in journalistic work
on campus publications. Sigma Delta
Chi, which was installed two years
ago, is a professional society offering
membership to students majoring in
journalism who intend to follow that
' line of work. Alpha Theta Epsilon is
the women's journalistic society, while
Alpha Delta Sigma encourages pro
ficiency 'in advertising.
For work in debating, Delta Sigma
Rho is the outstanding honorary,
' awarding membership to selected var
sity debaters at the end of their jun
ior year. Delta Alpha Delta honors
women debaters and its membership
is not restricted to any particular
class. Purple Quill is a local literary
guild which has for its purpose the
fostering of creative .writing and ap
preciation for it among .the students.

Along' musical, lines, Kappa Cam
, ma 'Psi and :Phi Mu Alpha, national
professional and honorary societies,
award membership for, uotstanding
achievement in any earapus musical
organization. Among women stu
dents, the Louise Homer club is the
honorary musical group. In dra
matics, Theta Alpha Phi has as its
eligibility requirement the playing of
two major or four minor roles in a
student production or the' demonstra
tion of proficiency along some other
phase of dramatic art.

Customs. Mould Activities
Of Freshmen on Campus
College customs at ...Penn State are
practices which have been handed
down from class to class. and have
now' become established traditions.
Originating from "various sources,
these practices have become ingrained
in student life and undergo constant
changes.
Prominent - among. , old7::Penn State
traditions is the.-eustom' of exchang
ing cordial "Hello's'ith.Other stu
dents on - the campus. ', 'Eveli , ''student
also greets the president of the Col
lege in this manner' ; with 'a tip of the
hat or civilicinaalute , .
'Smoking: on the:campus is confined
to places outside. of; lab
oratories, and Recreatkin hall. 'Penn
State men conduct'.themselves like
gentlemen and spoitinieri at all ath
letic events and 'aviaitrthe;singing of
the Alma Mater at - half-time of the
game.
Two freshman customs were re-in
stated, one added, and two removed
as a result of a customs revision made
by Student Council -last May. No
sophomore restrictions. remain be
cause of ' their removal three years
ago.
Freshmen will not be allowed to
smoke on the campu:s:this year and
must carry matches at-all times ex
cept in those periodi . ..deSienated as
holidays. Jackets, may be worn by
freshmen in place, of .the usual coat,
the Council also ruled:
The restriction 'requiring freshmen
to stay off the front campus walk
has been removed from the list. This
year freshmen will be.requii:ed to oc

The remaining freshman customs
arc as follows:
1. Do not walk across the grass on
the campus.
2. A. coat or jacket . must be worn
in public at all times. •
3. Always wear your dink, black
socks, and black tie,. except on trips,
on holidays, and on Sundays, or when
entertaining mothers or sisters, or
when escorting young women at times
of house parties and house dances.
4. Wear a regulation' card with
your name and preparatory or high
school printed on it in large letters.

first two weeks at College. ,

the chemistry curricula, while Sigma
Pi Sigma does the same for men and
women in physics._lota Sigma Pi is
the national' women's' - honorary and
professional chemistry fraternity, and
Alpha Pi Mu is .a local pre-medical
society open to students preparing to
study medicine. .

Kappa Delta Pi ,and Kappa Phi
Kappa, both national, organizations,
are the chief honoraries in the School
of Education. The former is open to
both men and women in the two up
per classes, while the latter restricts
its membership to upperclass men en
rolled in the school. Psi Chi encour
ages scholarship in: psychology, and
Omicron Nu honors high standing
junior and senior women in the home
economics curriculum.
Seven honorary or professional
groups recognize achievement in the
School of Engineering. Tau Beta Pi
elects from the upper fifth of the jun
iors and seniors in the school. Sigma
Tau requires marked ability along the
professional lines ot its members and

mechanical engineering

Epsilon promotes scholarship among
the civil engineering students, while
Eta Kappa Nu encourages electrical
engineering. Scarab is a professional
group of students in architecture as
is Pi Gamma Alpha in fine arts.
In the School of Liberal Arts, Pi
Gamma Mu is a .national social sci
ence honorary which elects. juniors
and seniors on the basis of scholastic
records in social science projects. Del
ta Sigma Pi is a 'national profession
al society for' students in the com
merce and financecurriculum, while
Pi Mu Epsilon encourages high schol
arship in mathematics, regardless of
school. Pi Lambe, Sigma is the lo
al pre-legal society,' and Phi Sigma
lota is a groan 'for students, interest
ed and proficient'in the romance lan
guages and literature.
