Awarded Honors
Martin, Stevens Receive Places
On Committees; Dunaway
Holds Council Post.
Two Penn State history instructors
were appointed to committee posts at
the third annual meeting of the Penn
sylvania Historical association in
Pittsburgh last Friday and Saturday.
Dr. Asa E. Martin, head of the his
tory department, was made a mem
ber of the committee on policy. Prof.
S. K. Stevens was appointed to a
place on the membership committee.
Prof. Wayland F. Dunaway will con
tinue as a member of the council of
the association.
During the past year Professor Ste
vens was a member of the program
committee. Professor Dunaway was
chairman of one of the general con
ference meetings Saturday morning
dealing with archives and research in
Pennsylvania history. Prof. Burke M.
Herman, also of the history depart
ment, presented a paper Friday eve
ning on "The Constitutional Struggle
in Pennsylvania, 1776-1790."
Professor Hermann's paper is con
cerned with the fourteen year strug
gle on the part of the old governing
clique to regain control of the gov
ernment, which, as the result of a
coup d'etat in 1776 passed into the
hands of the democracy whose
strength lay in the back counties. The
adoption of a new state constitution
in 1700 registered the success of the
movement.
The Pennsylvania Historical asso
ciation was organized .here in April
1933, after a series of conference's
called by Dr. Martin during the pre
ceding year. A Pennsylvania Histor
ical Convention met here in Septem
ber, 1932, and it was out of these
preliminary meetings that the present
association developed.

THE PENN- STATE COLLEGIAN
Netmen To Play
Pitt Team Here
Green, Block, Smith Will Form
Nucleus of Lion's Squad
For Opening Meet.
By PHIL HEISLER
With only three players sure of a
place in the starting line-up, the Nit
tany net team will open its season
with Pitt on the College courts to
morrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock.
The three regulars of last year,
Captain Nels Green, Pip Block, and
Jimmy Smith will form the 'nucleus
of the team. Competition has been
so close for the other positions that
with only the three nights of real
practice, Coach Stover has not yet
determined the other players.
Whether or not Dot Anderson, stel
lar co-ed player, is eligible for the
varsity team m as ye; undetermined.
If she is declared eligible she will
probably compete in the singles com
petition. Miss Anderson has been
working out daily with the varsity.
Over fifty candidates reported for
the tennis squad. Out of these aspir
ants, Coach "Dinh' Stover expects to
uncover several new stars. The ten
nis team has an eight-game schedule
this year, including meets with Pitt,
Carnegie Tech, Bucknell, Johns Hop
kins, Navy, Dickinson, Syracuse, and
Cornell.
