NITTANY COURTMEN
IMO SCRIMIIIIAES
Lion Coach Uses Davis, Walus,
Brand, Meyers, McMinn
As First Quintet
Although already greatly hampered
by injuries, the varsity basketball
five shoued considerable Improve
ment over their early season form in
a lengthy scrimmage -held following
the boxing and wrestling meets Sat
urday afternoon
Coach Dutch Hermann used as his
first team a. quintet composed of Bub
Davis and \Veins at forward, Captain
Freddy Brand at center, and Jock
Meyers,and Ed McMinn at guard
Walus and McMinn have fought their
way up horn last year's reserves, but
Davis, Meyers, and Brand have all
earned letters.
Against the reserves, this combina
tion displayed potential power, al
though it was obvious that the rough
edges will have, to be smoothed off
before the Lions- take the noel
against 'Western Maryland the Satur
day following Christmas vacation
McMinn appealed particularly effec
tive as a running guard, and he and
Captain Brand seem almost sure of
retaining their posts for the opening
games, at least.
Shilling Probable
Hermann will probably do a lot of
shifting at the other positions, how
eves, befoie the season starts. \Valt
Moser is slated for one of the forward
posts when his injured leg recovers
sufficiently for him to take part in
the scrimmages and there is an un
usually large number of sophomores
who may display enough to warrant
positions on the tarsity
•
funnies continue to hinder Hei
mann in his attempts to institute a
new running offense Joe Rubin,
who had been holding a second-string
guard post, may he out of-practice
until after the vacation with a strain
ed tendon, and Captain Biand and
Jack Afeynrs are still feeling the ef
fects of minus leg 'Nunes
