Co-eds 'Socially'
More Intelligent,
Woman M.A. Says
That Penn State women are socially
more intelligent than Penn State men
is the conclusion drawn from the re
sults of a study made 'last year by
Mildted L. Malkin, for het master's
degree.
The study was based on the scores
made by 169 members of the class of
1982 in the George Washington Um
‘ersity social intelligence tests. In
these the women as a unit sewed three
points higher than the men, averag
ing ninety-three compared to ninety
tot the men.
The tests wele divided into six
groups: Judgement in social situa
tions, memory for names and faces,
recognition of mental states from
facial expressions, observation of hu
man behavior, social information, and
tecognition of the mental state of the
speaker.
-In comparison with scores made by
seventy-eight State College high
school sophomores, Miss Mulkin found
that College students aieraged twen-
ty-six points higher High school
gills maintained -the women's record
for being more intelligent socially than
the boys.
The scores of College men exceeded
those of high school boys by twenty
nine points, while college women aver
aged only twenty-three points higher
than high school gills. This points to
the fact that the social intelligence of
men increases mme between the ages
of fifteen and nineteen than does that
of the women, according to the study
results.
