IN THE GRASP OF THE OCTOPUS
The octopus of clique politics, which has
wormed its insidious tentacles firmly about
class elections and made itself felt in other
campus contests, has befouled the one realm
where it is absolutely undesirable. Tuesday
night, twenty-five fraternities, a huge portion of
them members of the 1032 Locust Lane clique,
east a solid \ole to elect the man of their choice
to the presidency of the Intcrfralernily Council.
The victor defeated a man who was backed by
members of the 1932 Campus organization.
Our adolescent politicians, blind to the fact
that the Interfraternity Council leadership is one
not to be tossed about as a political plum and
spurred by promises of future patronage. have
lowered the office itself and sullied the purpose
of Council.
This editorial is not a discussion of person
alities. The new president of the Council may
be as outstanding a man as either of the de
feated candidates. He was simply the pawn,
the front behind which jackals lurked, unable to
capture the ,quarry themselves, but quick to
sei/c the spoils, once success had come their
way. And what puny spoils await them. Five
or ten of the clique members will probably re
ceive Interfrafernity Ball appointments.
Unpleasant as it is to contemplate, this dis
integration of Council judgment has been
brought about by the false worth attributed to
Ball appointments combined with the balloon
likc inflation of campus politics.
It is regrettable that the organization which
carried its banner to victory in the Senior class
elections must bear The odious stigma cast upon
it by those members who could not distinguish
between class and Council elections. The organ
ization leaders, although innocent themselves,
must suffer the damage wrought by this
Frankenstein, this irresistible robot which has
turned upon its creators.
PENN STATE—a fraternity college, proud
of the fine spirit shown by fraternity men to
ward one another. THE INTERFRATERNITY
COUNCIL—a highly-compacl, co-operative or
ganization, fiee from sub-rosa politics, intent on
working for the best interests of the assembled
brotherhoods. What hollow definitions these—
as hollou as a mollusk’s shell, sucked empty by
the squirming tentacles of the octopus.
WHAT’S IN A NAME?
Although Shakespeaie was often coiicct in his
mietv as to “what’s in a nami! 7 ” thene’* a good deal m
a name when it's wionglv applied to one of the College
schools.
Invariably a student emolled in the Mmoial Indus
tncs School is dubbed a “miner,” and lemains a “minei”
in <qute of the fact that he may take no mining couiscs
in College and nevei have a thing to do with mining tim

ludustnes School is emolled in the mining curuculu,

JUST AROUND THE CORNER
The final examination schedule appeared foi the

group will pass from the calmness of classroom attend

acterizes examination period.
Well, the examination schedule can serve as an
omen. It’s the tiaditionnfwarmng that’s never heeded,
when a college is found in which preparation for exam
inations is conducted beforehand, we’ll believe whole
heartedly in all educational devices and the thoughtful
ness of the student mind. But convictions won’t change,
and history has every chance of repeating itself, for no
undergraduate ever needed advice.
