IN 1921 Lions Won First Intercollegiate Tourney—Was Held at State College During the vs Intel of 1921-1522,1 boxing received its first great impetus! as a college sport n hen the Intercol legiate Boxing Association sins recog nized by the biationsl Collegiate Ath letic Association The charter mem bers of the first boxing league were the University of Pennsrhania, the United States Naval Academy, Mas sachusetts Institute of Technology, and the Pennsylvania State College Although bo‘ing had been extreme ly popular as an intramural sport in many colleges, fen intercollegiate meets had been held until the season of 1920 when Pennsylvania, Navy, and Penn State carried schedules of seve ral engagements. Before this season, one of the first college contests took place in 1919 between Penn and Penn State. "Spike" Webb, present Navy boxing coach, was act ive in this work and served as head coach of the American Expeditionary Forces. 'Dr. R. Tait' McKenzie, of the Uni versity of Penn.vhama, Lieutenant- Commander William A. Richardson, of the Naval Academy, and Dr. Allan Winter Rowe, of N I T, were in strumental in drawing up the first set of rules to govern intercollegiate boxing. The by-laws were based on the rules used by the War Depart ment Commission on Training Camp activities. Dr. McKenzie was elect ed the first president of the Asso ciation. Penn State suceeded m owning this first tourney. Navy Wins Trophy Colgate and Syracuse officially en tered the Association In the 1921-25 season, and M. L T withdrew. The tournament was held at the Unmer sity of Penirsylvania. In addition to the flue member groups Yale entered a full team. After a close fight the Navy succeeded in winning.
