VOCATIONAL. GUIDANCE
Freon an observation of statistics compiled after the registration
of students at Penn State for the year 1021-25 it was found that a'
total of one hundred and fourteen students have already changed
their courses of study
Most of the changes have been occasioned, it is believed. hi stu
dents uho seek easier courses or b) those uho wish to benefit
selves by the perusal of those subjects that will give them a morel
substantial foundation for future work The only redeeming feature
found in these statistics was that a net total of four changes were
made from the probation section to regularly recognind schools
within the College
\y/her a man comes to college he generally knows what course of
study he wishes to pursue and he accordingly enrolls in the school
that will permit him to obtain the instruction he desires It is too
often the case, however. that a man makes the in.stake of selecting
the wrong course or that he cheats himself be choosing the easiest
pathway to obtain a diploma Such a man is more tc be pitied than
censored
In some Instances men have been known to suddenly change
from engineering to liberal arts or iron: agriculture to chemistry at
ter they have fully convinced themselves that they are better fated
to excell.m the school of tneir second choice If they are successful,
well and good, if not, they had better remained where they v.cre for
it is generally conceded that fa:lure in a chosen field is due to a.
lack of self-applicntlon
Educational guidance is one means of helping the student select
the course for which he is best fitted, and to this end the Penn State
Y M. C A has arranged a' program of weekly addresses that , will
serve to guide the student in the selection of his course As most
of the changes occur between the freshman and sophomore years it
would be particularly well for the treshmen tc seek out the good th•u
will assumdly be contained in these messages
Such men as Archibald Campbell, a noted missionary in Korea
and who is now working among the colleges as secretory of the Stu
dent Volunteer Movement, and Allan K Foster another mail who has
long been connected with the mdustiial movement have been en
gaged to speak Other men of equal prominence have betn selected
to speak at various occasions
The "Y" has struck a key to a problem that is vvcrthy of hearty
cooperation and backing The general field advice that will be
oltered to Pcnn State men and women along vocational vill
have religion as its basic fitter No academic training, howe-ar
thorough, can be of much value if this fundamental principle of li,e
is sacrificed
Without doubt, many students will look forward to the first of
these addresses in order that they may obtain a broader perspective
of their course, their present understanding of the particular sub
ject, and to what extent they may find actual application of their
knowledge in the future the "I"' will endeavor to aid the student
do all this by making the series of addresses broad enough in swipe
to include the general fields of rural education, engineering, journol
isle, banking. the Christian ministiy, and teaching Here is iallisble
advice which the undergraduate nuiy have if he will give his reisonal
attendance at the addresses will he grasp the opportunity'
FRESHMAN DEBATING
Through the efforts of certain men on the Penn State facaltv an
innovation in forensic circles was made last year that was most bene
lanai to those who took part in its development It was the ei gunk
zation of a freshman debating team
Much tone and attention was given to the formation of I year
ling team that could successfully compete with similar orgato7ations
from other institutions. In c‘eiy way the protect was a success and
at that time it was hoped that future years would meet with such
enthusiasm and response as was accorded the efforts of the directors
last year
A freshman debating temp is highly essential if Penn State is to
have debating teams made up of members from the three upperelasses.
for it is this first year of experience that paves the way for morc
fully developed materialith which to build varsity squads
The experience to be gained from participation m debating of
the caliber that is presented at Penn State is a valuable experience
in itself It is an opportunity that is not given the average Indi
vidual. All college men are not qualified to maintain a position on
a college debating team that meets annually some of the foremost
teams in the country But to those oho have the ability and the
inteiest there is no better opportunity to enrich their education than
as a member of a debating team.
When the call came for freshman debaters this fall approximately
eighteen men responded The mere significance of numbers alone
was enough to dishearten the directors, but instead of being discour
aged they have decided to give the protect a fail trial Last year
there were thirty or more freshmen on hand when the squad assem
bled for try-outs She reason for the scant showing this year eon
probably be attributed to conflicting engagements on the meeting
nights at which times the freshmen were required to attend other
functions.
Another call has been issued for candidates to report tonight
Out of a class of one thousand men there should he more than one
and eight-tenths per cent who are both anxious and interested enough
to take part in this phase of collegiate activity to respond to the call.
The chance comes but once in the life of every freshman, now is the
time to take advantage of it
