CHAMPIONS!
Penn State may well be proud of her boxing and wrestling teams
racing a formidable list of rivals, they have fought their way to in
tercollcgrite championships and have set up a record, unique in the
history of college sports and one that is likely to stand for many
)cars. Tc these Nittany athletes and their coaches, the student body
c•tends its congratulations They have done much for Pdnn State
The history of athletics at this institution has been a brilliant
one Year after year has followed; bringing fresh laurels and adder
fame to Penn State But it would be hard to find more impressive
‘ictories than have been gained this year. A football eleven, missing
if championship by but a narrow margin, an undefeated soccer team
a successful basketball team, the exploits of Nittany runners on for
elm' tracks and now, as a crowning triumph, come championships in
wrestling and bos mg. Truly, this is the Golden Age of Penn Stan
athletics.
Intimately wmen into the fabric of these struggles of Nittan3
athletes in victory and defeat, is the story of a constant effort to live
up to the highest ideals of sportsmanship. 'Here is the inspiring
thing in the record of athletics in this Nittany Valley. It is satisfy.
mg indeed, that the Nittany Lion has gained such an imposing arrat
cf victories, untainted by the charge of poor sportsmanship.
The spirit of fair play is one of the finest of Penn State tradi
firms. rortunate is the undergraduate who absorbs it and makes of
it a Riiding prpciple in the sterner struggles of life.
GROUP RESPONSIBILITY
Doting the early existence of the Penn State Club an extensive
.program of athletic and social activities was carried out In the
past sear these activities have been so few that the work of the club
as an organization has been hardly discernible The only npparen'
reason for this is the Fact that the non-fraternity man lacks the nec
cssary interest to keep it in a thriving condition
In rn editorial on February eighth, it was pointed out that it it
possible for the Penn State Club to become n power on the campus
Unfortunately,' this cannot be done by the efforts of a few, but mus
result from the combined and unified efforts of all non-fraternit}
men To support the proposed Penn State Honor Code a revival of
the interest shown at the birth of this organization four years ago is
needed. Petty prejudices are of no avail, but group responsibility
on the part of all concerned will aid materially in the success of this
project.
It is a complaint frequently heard among the unorganized stu
dents that college activities are governed by fraternity men This is
due largely to the fact that fraternities possess in some degree three
requisites which Make themselves evident in the form of leaders, or
ganization and support. The non-fraternity men have leaders but
lack the organization and support necessary for success Not only
do fraternities choose leaders but they also develop them To say
that all leaders are fraternity men is lust as untrue as that all frater
nity men ale leaders
What is to prevent the unaffiliated group from taking part in
college life, participating in activities rather than remaining out of
them and "crabbing" about fraternity control' , Let the non-frater
nity man use his latent ability in making his presence known. The
very fact that he is a Penn State student ought to be proof enough
that he its ability. If these men but realize it, theirs is the same pri
vilege on the campus as that of the fraternity man. Social functions,
activities mid active part in college affairs is within their grasp, but
there must be organization to guide them which recognizes its responsi
bility to a group Fraternity success is dependent upon this element
of responsibility
The question then arises: Would not an organization of all non
fraternity men become unwieldy' , The answer is no, provided that
the unit system is carried out. At the present time, there is a divisional
system which separates these inen into units for the purpose of ath
letic competition. This idea could be worked out still further.
It is a healthy sign when individual students take an active inter
est in discussing the problems which ore presented from time to time
111 college life In a letter published last week in the COLLEGIAN, a
junior hits upon one of the big difficulties which prevents the growth
of Penn State ideals If, as the Writer suggests, there ore prejudices
and jealousies existing between fraternity and non-fraternity men,
immediate steps should be taken to correct this condition. Penn State
is a democratic college and such it should be if it is worthy of, recog
titian as a state institution where students of all ranks - are privileged
to gain an education.
Has the Penn State Club degenerated to the point where it is
incapable of progress? Its founders had a , vision of a ,group on the
campus which could be pointed to with pride if any ideal, such as
the proposed Honor Code, is to be realized tliere must be unity of
efforts, fraternity and non-fraternity men working for the same end.
Each group must recognise its own responsibility. There is no place
at Penn State for prejudice of any kind.
