G. h. Crossley 'IN. Chief Operator of
the college radio station h:es been stead
jjy improving the quality of the broad
tailing and receiving service* at Penn
Sate. As one of the regular relay
stations on Trunk Line U of the Amer
ican Itadio Delay League, the local
gUtion handles a considerable number
of messages each night from ten until
three.
Heard ut Long Distance
It is the ambition of every radio oper
ator to be heard at as great a distance
is possible, and Crossley and his as
sistants have received cards and letters
from operators in every section of the
Taited States, informing them that the
Peon State station had been heard.
The latest noliee has come from a sta
tion situated about llftceii hundred miles
vest of San Francisco, making the to
tal distance covered by the IVnu State
ration nearly futry-seven hundred
miles.
Penn Slate easily qualified in the
semi-finals for the coming irans-atlan
tic tests, when American auteur radio
stations will endeavor t» "work” Eng
lish and Scotch stations. The lluals
will be staged next month from the
thirteenth to the thirty-tlrsi. ami it is

Xew Broadcasting Towers
The new station now under construc
tion back of the University Club, will
be of much higher elliciency than the
present one, it is expected. Old ideas
concerning radii/ operation are embod
ied in the large steel tower now used.
This tower. It has been calculated, ah
sorbs on account of its steel construc
tion, at least forty per cent of the t*n
®s)‘ that to used in receiving and
tattdeasting. Moreover, the steel tower
is said to be about twice as high as is
necessary, and the new towers, which
till be wooden, so as not to absorb
w4 **y, will be about ninety feet in
height Another feature of the now
Kstlon will be the ••cage” antennae,
*hicb differ from the ordinary antennae
now used, in that the wires are ar
ranged to form a horizontal cylinder, the
Utter being considerably more ellieiont
than the present arrangement.
