The COLLEGIAN takes this opportunity to express a wish of Godspeed to the members of the graduating class. Whatever paths of life these men and wom en may travel, it is our hope that they may always meet with success and that their actions may always reflect credit upon the Alma Mater which they represent. In past years, the Mid-year Commencement Exercises have lack ed, to some extent, the impressiveness of the June graduation. If the desire of the President of the College, the Registrar and a host of others, is to be realized, this year's Mid-year 'Commencement Ex ercises will be made as imposing as possible and will no doubt, rival those which are held in June. Unfortunately, mid-year graduating classes are usually much smaller than those of June, and winter conditions at Penn State are such that relatives and friends of the graduates are not able to get to the college to attend the exercises in large numbers. Consequently, the student body must be relied upon to fill the Auditorium in honor of those who "have finished the race". In this group there are many men who have lived the "strenous life" foi. Penn State, men who represented theizi,Alma Mater in athletic contests, men who have made personal sacriPites in order to 'serve their college in dramatic, scholastic, military, irr.lsic and of4o - a — ditOtTnsr — Siintriftinres • Killinger, Detar and ,Hlils will long be remembered by students of Penn State Let's fill the Auditorium tonight in honor of the grad uates The college authorities are showing a sincere appreciation of undergraduate feeling with regard to the college 'holidays and are endeavoring to effect a calendar for the coming school year that will be less of a target for student petitions for changes and exten sions A pint committee of three members of the College Senate as representatives of the administration and three members of the Stu dent Council as representatives of the student body is now meeting and endeavoring to make up a schedule satisfactory to all concerned This calendar will then be submitted to the College Senate for filial action. The committee is trying to make up a calendar that will contain the number of hours prescribed, by the State Legislature, that will begin as late as possible in the fall, that will contain all the necessary vacations and holidays, and that will end as early as possible in June. In short, it is endeavoring to find the ideal that will be sat isfactory to the educational authorities and at the same time to the entire student body. The large number of petitions arising from the student body for changes in the holiday periods has been caused in large part by a lack of understanding The average student does not fully realize the conditions which must be complied with, and so blithely and without very serious contemplation, favors any petition which will let him out an hour earlier or permit him to return an hour later than set by the calendar The average student realizes only hazily that the State of Pennsylvania stipulates that so many actual hours of sdhool must be contained in a semester, and that if we are to dismiss early in June in order for the student to get work earlier, school must start earlier in September. He does not reflect that if we are to have a week off before Christmas so that he may have an op portunity to work, we must cut the time short after New Year's Day or else add the days at some other time, that if we are to have four days at Thanksgiving and a week at Easter the school work must be done at some other time In the past too many petitions have arisen from the student body for the changing of the college holidays Many times they have been justified and other times they have not, but nevertheless there have been too many The calendar should be made right in the first place as far as it is able to be made. The College authorities realize this and are taking the student viewpoint into consideration The College is making a wise move and we hope that there will be less necessity for student petitions in the future MAGAZINE EDITOR WILL LECTURE TO ENGINEERS on Friday afternoon, February thliii, at about four thirty o'clock, In Room 0110 Engineering D.
