FROSH NINE WILL MAKE
GOOD VARSITY MATERIAL
Tho Frcshmnn nine has displayed
excellent work during the season de
spite the fact that they were doffratod
by the team representing IClskl, In
their second gume Conch Grove’s
team deserves mention of the splen
did teamwork which wan theirs In all
of the other games The entire nolle
dulc comprised five games, four of
which were played on the home [field.
The fine work'of the various players
marks thorn as qjrong candidates foi
the varsity team next year
_ In the initial contest' which l was
pluved here on Saturday, Muy .first
Uellefonte was completely outclassed
by the yearlings who ’piled up eight
runs against the vlaltora without al
lowing them a single run The Fresh
men gave a fine account 'of themselves
although the honors went to Miller,
who retired twelve butters In tin*
seven Inning contest, allowed blit two
hits, and knocked out a beautiful
home run This first opportunitv for
the Freshmen to demonstrate their
ability was highly -commendable
With the success of the first gnmc
came the defeat of the second On
May eighth, Klskl opposed the Fiesh
men on New Beaver field In a poorly
contested battle The direct cause of
the defeat was that of- poor fielding
which resulted In some had errors at
critical stages of the game, although
nothing exceptional wus showed by
the opponents Severn! openings pre
sented 'themselves for the Freshmen
to come ahead but they were lost be
foie they could be put to advantage
The 'game continued for nine Innings
In the eighth, the ’23 men succeeded
In securing fnui runs and might have
won at that tlino were It not foi bad
plays The ninth Inning closed with
the score standing nine to six in Kls
kl’s favor
The wailings came back strong In
the contest wt|h Lafayette-High
School of Buffnlo on the following
Saturday was six mid one
half Innings In length and not at any
time during the game did the visitors
have n chance to give- the Fenn State
team a good game The first Inning
was a short one but In tfie second
the local tenm livened up ami scored
thiee inns when Kelly tost control foi
pciformnnce in the 1 fourth by scoring
tin oceans when Kelly lost contol foi
a short- itmeT In’the fifth. the'Freall
men decided the contest by scoring
eight mns This work was a remark
able improvement over that of tin*
pieceding week and tho team deserves
mention for the splendid effort
Tho last of the home contests was
that with the Cornell Freshmen who
lost n very interesting gnmc by the
score of six to two The game was a
fast one although the score might no"
Indicate it Cornell gave excellent sup
poit to its pitcher hut the scoring of
the local nine was unchecked ' The
visitors.succeeded In getting ten well
earned hits from Longhurst to tho
sown- which the Stato aggregation got
from the opposing pitcher Tho field
ing of the local boya was sensational
In that they performed In such a mun
nei, ns to warrant much credit.
