OF CHICAI Captain Ahrends Assumes Charge Here Many Changes Planned For Spring Drill Major 0 W. 8011, in compliance with orders from tho War Depattment, has left State College to take charge of the organisation of a military department at the University of Chicago. His work at. Chicago will be to establish a mili tary department along the same lines as that at the University of Pennsylva nia. The Rork will be elective to the students for a year or so, but it is hoped to advance the standard of the work there until It complies with the requirements of the Federal Reserve Act There seems to be little likelihood at present of there being any one ap— pointed to take Major Bell's place at Penn State and this semester's work will bo In charge of Captain Almond's assisted by Lieutenant Baehr and Ser geant Allen. A decided Innovation, which is to be permanent hereafter, will be Intrduced this semester by having a four hour drill period for the Sophomores on Thursday afternoons while the Fresh men sections will each have ono two hour period Regimental drill will in all probability be held the last hour on Monday afternoon at which time all three sections have a drill period sched uled Another feature will be that of having the Sophomore companies In charge of the Senior officers and the Freshmen In charge of - the Juniors This plan will give the Junior Lieu tenant. practical experience in the I handling of men The advantage of having four hours In succession of drill are readily ap parent. A great amount of time will be saved which wan taken up before by roll-call and the taking out and putting away of the-rifles Also, by having four hours at a stretch, hikes, maneuvers, and other work hitherto impossible may be attempted. in fact, hiking, and manoeuvering, entrenching, target practice, and so forth, will form a large part of this semester's work. Target shooting from entrenched or se creted positions will bo done and there a possibility of hailing an elimina tion contest in target practice towards the end of the semester Minor tactic., with the assistance of the Signal Corps. will also be on the program. It le hop - e - dlo have the Corps equipped with a field radio outfit as well an heliographs and imager lines by 2) , time spring drU) starts , The orders wh &so tar cent from'':..ilege Wire- Ins Station and thence by buzzer lines to the various commanders. On the whole, the military work next spring promises to be very Interesting and at the name time very instructive. PROHIBITION LEAGUE STARTS STUDY CLASS The Prohibition League inaugurated study class work at a recent meeting. Each week a separate phase of the 11q our problem will be taken up and then studied by the members of the league Richardson'a "Liquor Problem" will be used, and Professor 1 L rooter, of the Romance Language Department will act as instructor. A movement has boon started to af filiate the other student organizations of the college with the Prohibition League. In all of the largo Woatorn colleges, the numerous student organi sations co-operate with the Prohibi tion Leagues, and a condition of this kind will be brought about here If It in possible "An effort la , also being mode to Interest the girls In the League.
