He was formerly professor of geology and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of South Dakota. The F. and M. Weekly writes as follows: “With the rushing season on us in full blast, the evils of the system in vogue here once more attracts attention. Bound by no rules, either self-imposed or faculty made, the fraternities and clubs have been forced into a contest more like a rush for cigars at a smoker than anything we know of. Freshmen are pledged before they ever see the college, their intention to enter being considered sufficient grounds. The injury which a fra ternity or club suffers through this system is a grevious one. Its ideals are debased, its honor stained, and its most guarded treasure, its har mony, is threatened. Yet disas trous as the system is to the frater nity or club, it is the freshman who feels most deeply its injustice. Wide-eyed, ignorant and suscepti ble, he is coerced to choose in a few short hours, his social compan ions for the four crucial years of his life. Without any preparation, without a proper opportunity of examination, he is grabbed and called upon to assume a tie less close only than those that bind to mother and sweetheart.” Pressing Repairing Dyeing A New Man at An Old Stand C.
