The campus was beautifully lighted by 150 Japanese lanterns. Over the walk leading from the street to Main building a large arch was arranged bearing the words “Welcome 1918”. As the members of the student body pass ed through they were presented to Dr. Sparks by Vigor Cranston, president of the college Y. M. C. A. The hand of good fellowship was extended by all the old men to the men who are here for the first time and a jolly good time was had by all. The college Glee Club was on hand to furnish music for the occa sion. The Girl's Chorus also render ed several much appreciated selec tions. Messrs. Gillespie and Hall were much applauded in their min strel performances. Refreshment booths, distributed at various points around the campus, were in charge of faculty ladies, who were assisted by members of the Young Men’s and Young Women’s associa tions. An effort was made to make all the new men feel at home and co convey to them some ot the loyal Penn State spirit. The reception was well planned and showed a marked improvement over recep tions of past years. Instead of a somewhat boisterous spirit prevail ing there was present a refined atmosphere. This again shows the remarkable influence of the Y. M. C. A. upon the life at Penn State. Forum Literary Society. The entertainment committee of the Y. M. C. A. has arranged for one of the finest courses ever held at the Pennsylvania State College. In past years, all old students know the entertainments arranged for by Y. M. C, A. have furnished a few nights diversion during the long winter evenings. Although some what isolated, the men of State have an excellent opportunity through these courses to hear the best things in music and literature. Being in a technical school, the men often have a tendency to neglect the cultural and more strictly refined side of their nature. It is with the purpose of making up this deficiency that these entertain ment courses are offered. The first of the series of enter tainments will be held on Novem ber 7ch, when the Marcus A. Keller man Company will be here. This company is largely a musical organization. Mr. Kellerman, the leader of the company is himself a great singer, and has been employ ed by the Edison Phonograph com pany where his voice has been reproduced on their records. On November 21st, a fine even ing is assured to all who attend. Mr. Ralph Bingham, a humorist of note, will be the leading figure on the program. This will be the first appearance of Mr. Bingham before State College audience. He comes to us highly recommended, and should command a large audience. Dr. Edward A. Steiner, a cele brated lecturer, will be here on December 12tb. Dr. Steiner is a Russian, and is said to be one of the best men on the platform in our country today. The date of the fourth entertain ment has been set for January 9th. On this evening the Kellog-Haines Singing Party will occupy the stage. This in a large company which can be depended upon to furnish an en joyable program. The last of the five entertain ments will be given on March 20th. This will be probably by the best one of the course. On this evening, the Killernery Girls with Rita Rich as leader, will be here. Their num bers are made up almost entirely of Scottish Songs. Coming with the reputation of an excellent company, the Killernery Girls will doubtless be greeted by an large audience. The five entertainments have all been scheduled tnrough the Rid! path-Brockway Lyceum Bureau. The committee are to be congratu lated upon their success in securing such a splendid course of lectures and entertainments. An advanced ticket sale will be begun within the next few weeks. The Collegian will also publish a detailed description of the enter tainments as they appear from time to time. In the meantime, anyone who desires any further information about the course, may communicate with the members of the entertain ment committee. The committee is as follows John D. Gold, chairman, W. R. Stewart, J. E. Hannum, G. Jeffrey, J. D. Zink, R. Greenland, and C. W McDonald. Mention the Collegian when call ing on our advertisers. Pressing Repairing Dyeing A New Man at An Old Stand C. C.
