ALUMNI
The Erie association gave a royal
reception to the boys of the Glee
and Mandolin club upon their ar
rival at that city. Immediately
after the concert, a dinner was
given by the association and both
the alumni and undergraduates vied
with each other to provide the best
entertainment.

Harry R. Rosen T 3, assistant in
botany at the University of Wis
consin. has recently been elected
into the Sigma Xi, a national organ
ization for scientific research. The
prospects for a Penn State alumni
branch of faculty members at that
institution are very good.
Food Sale
The junior class of the Home
Economics department, under the
direction of Miss Perry, will hold a
food sale on the lawn of the
Woman’s Building, Saturday, May
23, from 12:00 until 3:00 o’clock.
An attractive list of viands will be
on sale, including pies, cakes, sal
ads, bread, candy and strawberry
shortcake which will be served at
small tables on the lawn. Ready
to-eat lunches, packed to take
away will be a novel feature.
The sale is for the benefit of the
Summer Conference fund of the
Y. W. C. A.
A deputation team composed of
the following persons will speak to
the inmates of the Huntingdon re
formatory on Sunday, May 31, and
at the Y. M. C. A. at Tyrone in the
afternoon: Horst, Hays, Welty,
Weigle, Crawford, Chase and Mr.
Buchman.

Departmental
Mr. John Hamilton, of the U. S.
Department of Agriculture, gave a
very instructive lecture before the
senior and junior classes on the
subject of good roads, last Thurs
day. He pointed out that every
good road must be dry, solid, easy
and smooth.
The juniors in the Agronomy
department have elected S. P.
Jones as their representative in the
Student Council for the coming
year.
The sophomores in the Animal
Husbandry department have elect
ed Olmsted to represent them in
the Student Council.
Mr. W. R. McKnight, 1913 Ag
ronomy, for some time employed
as assistant agriculturist to the
Pennsylvania Railroad, has been
engaged as manager on a grain, hay
and horse farm at Broomal, near
Philadelphia. The Pennsylvania
Railroad, in its retrenchment, has
temporarily withdrawn its agricul
tural service.
Mr. E. L. Moffit will resume field
work on the soil survey in Lancas
ter County about June 1.
Mr. W. A. Krimmel, Agronomy
1913, employed during the past
year on the farms of the National
Fire Proofing Company at Hayden
ville, Ohio, has accepted a position
as assistant manager on an up-to
date farm in the northeastern part
ot Pennsylvania.
Dr. W. R. Crane attended the
meeting of the Anthracite branch
of the American Institute of Mining
Engineers at Wilkesbarre on the
evening of May 9.
Bandmaster Appointed.
Mr. Wilfred O. Thompson, U. S.
A. retired, now living at Someiville,
Massachusetts, has accepted the
position of Bandmaster of the Col
lege Cadet band. He has an un
usual army record as a successful
band leader and musician. The
number of pieces in the band will
be increased to 60 next year and
will include drum and bugle corps.
Music will be used at each drill. It
will be the endeavor of the new
officer to maintain the high
efficiency standard of the band in
years past under student leadership.
At the same time it is evident that
an arrangement whereby one man
gives his entire time to the work is
likely to be even more efficient.
The new Bandmaster will begin his
detail in September.
