Trailing Arbutus It might be fitting at this season to offer a plea for the greatest favorite of our wild flowers, the trailing arbutus. A few years ago the woods around State Col lege were filled with the fragrant blossoms of this flower. Even today there are many places beauti fied by the arbutus, but an ever in creasing number of "nature lovers” has threatened its extinction be cause many gatherers have pluck ed up the whole plant,' root and stalk. Why cannot we, who love the beautiful things in life, remem ber to cut or clip off the flowering branches and, instead of extermin ating the plant, increase its produc tion of beautiful flowers. When we have protected it by this treat ment, we can more truly appreciate the poet’s words: “Sequestered flower of April days. Thy covert bloom in leafy ways A spell about me weaves: Thy frosted petals faint pink glow, Crystal pure like urns of snow That all with incense overflow Half hid beneath the leaves.” Remaining Deficit The Y. M. C. A finds itself $266.25 in arrears for the past year. As a result of Billy Sunday day the association was able to de crease its deficit from $l4OO to this amount. Although this contribu tion may seem large at first glance upon investigation it is found to fall below $.25 per person present. When we consider the privilege that was ours and the unquestion able value of our Y. M. C. A. to the college and community it seems our duty to make up this deficit with out their personal solicitation if possible. President Wilson says “You can test the modern community by the degree of its interest in the Young Men’s Christian Association.” In this test according to membership we have no equal in the college world. Why then is it not possible to clear off this sum without fur ther notice. Faculty Additions, Trustees of the Penn State Col lege made three important appoint ments to the faculty this week. Dr. Arthur S. Shomaker was ap pointed college physician and physical director. He holds de grees from Columbia University and Kansas City Medical College. For the past four years he has been physician and director at Tsing Hua College, Peking, China. Prof. M. G. Kains who was made the head of Horticulture has degrees from Michigan Agricultural College and Cornell University. He has recently been assistant editor of the American Agri culturist. The new head of the Department of Public Speaking is Prof. J. T. Marshman who holds the same position in the Ohio Wesleyan Uni versity. He will give especial at tention to Penn State's debating team which this year defeated Swarthmore, Franklin, and Mar shall and Dickinson. The Athletic association finds itself with the problem each year at this time of getting sufficient houses of entertainment for the athletics competing in the inter scholastic meet. This year 150 men are expected to be here and this will necessitate the aid of the fraternities in as liberal a manner as possible. Any house desiring to entertain any particular man or school should make their wants known to Manager Devoe or his assistants.
