    Prof. Putney Returns to State

mal Husbandry and Dairy Husban
dry of the Rhode Island State Col
lege has been appointed Assistant
Professor of Dairy Husbandry at
The Pennsylvania State College:
He will take up his new work July
1 and will be a valuable addition to
the staff of the School of Agricul
ture.
He has had practical experience
and excellent training. Mr. Putney
was born on a dairy farm in New
Hampshire and in 1901 was gradu
ated from the Concord, New
Hampshire high school. The fol
lowing year he entered the New
Hampshire State College and grad
uated from the Agricultural De
partment in 1905. He at once
secured a position on a pure bred
Jersey farm, but before his year's
work was finished he was appoint
ed Assistant in Animal Industry
and Agronomy at The Pennsyl
vania State College; and when the
Department of Animal Nutrition
was established the next year be
was transferred to Animal Nutrition
work under Dr. Armsby.
Besides his research he devoted
considerable time to the study of
general and agricultural chemistry
and practical feeding which led to
his Master's Degree in Agriculture
at The Pennsylvania State College
in 1908. The following year he
received a fellowship at the Uni
versity of Missouri. His work at
that Institution included studies in
breeding and feeding. The dairy
herd of the Missouri Agricultural
College was used for a special
study in breeding. The work was
published by the American Breed
er's Association. He also made a
study of dairy cattle judging and
stock management.

to Dean and Director Mumford.
This gave him valuable experience
in planning research work. After a
year he was appointed Professor of
Animal Husbandry at the Rhode
Island State College which position
he has held the past three years
with the exception of several
months which he devoted to a study
of European Agriculture. Profes
sor Putney's new work will include
instruction and investigation in Milk
Production.
The Baltimore Alumni Asso
ciation of Penn State will hold a
very important business meeting at
