BY THE WAY Students of the University of Pennsylvania have organized a "Hardship Club" whose member ship must shin up 20 foot ropes hand over hand, swim 100 yards, walk a mile in less than seven minutes and dip under the parallel bars ten times. They must sleep on the gynasium floor, take a swim in the Schuykill when the water is near the freezing point, get up at 3 a. m. for a ten-mile walk and in every way show contempt for fatigue, pain, sleep, cold, heat and everything else anybody doesn't like. A tight between a member of the third class and one of the fourth class at the Annapolis Naval Acad emy is the subject of an inves tigation started last week. It is said that Midshipman Lawrence, a fourthclass man, was compelled to do severe physical exercise known as "the 166" by a third class man. His performance did not please the upper classman, who, it is said, laid hands on the young fellow to make the command plainer. This was resented with a blow that led to a fight. Should the upper classman be found guilty of the offence, his in fraction would be plainly within the definition of "brutal hazing", which calls for dismissal from the service. A Massachusetts Institute of Technology senior named Burdick had for his thesis the problem of making sodium sulphide by a process different from the one usually employed. In the presence of Professor Hayward and several students he made the experiment last week.
