Old Willow Some apprehension
Not - Weakened has arisen in regard
to the Old Willow
in relation . to the work being done
upon it by the men in the Land
scape Gardening Course. There is,
however, no foundation to the argu
ments that the tree has been weak
ened and its life shortened. The
operation was unusually difficult
owing to the stage to which decay
had taken place, and, to secure
good results, the work should have
been done ten or twelve years ago.
In'the condition in which it stood
tliis fall, the tree had a very short
length of life, and would probably
have fallen after two or three heavy
windstorms. Now, however, the
large mass of decayed punk which
was of no value at all in giving
strength to the trunk has been re
placed by concrete, and the tree
has been strengthened correspond
ingly.
Thy splitting caused by the re
opening of an old frost-crack has
been overcome by the use of iron
bolts. Other stays have been add
id so that the tree is now in fairly
good shape to withstand the heavy
winds. While. no accurate predic
tion can be made as to the length
of time the Old Willow will be able
to remain intact, there is no question
but that the work done has been of
a decided advantage to it, and all
Who are interested in the preserva-
tion of historic points in connection
with the college will appreciate the
effort that has been made toward
this end by the Landscape Garden
ing men.
No Thanks- Owing to the fact
giving Issue. that a ' large num-
ber of students will
be out of town at the regular time
of issue next week, we shall omit
the paper for that time, and en
deavor to devote as much space as
possible in the following number to
the of two weeks' period.
The New Dynamometer Car
The 28,000 lb. dynamometer car
which the Pennsylvania Railroad
has turned over to the School of
Engineering for its use at the col
lege and out on the railroads, arriv
ed here on Saturday. Later in the
day it was visited by the Governor
and other distinguished guests.
The car was hauled up from
Bellefonte by the college locomo
tive and enough load was added in
the way of cars in order to try out
the recording apparatus and to
obtain records to demonstrate the
working of the dynamometer. It
may be stated that primarily, the
purpose of the car is to determine
how much pull it takes to haul a
train. This is graphically recorded
as a continuous record on a paper
moving one inch for every 100 ft.
traveled on the rails.
By aid of other records, many
facts may be obtained as to effect
of curves, grades, wind pressure and
irregularities of track on the train
resistance.
This is a valuable addition to the
equipment in the course in Railroad
Mechanical Engineering.
Pittsburg Game Arrangements.
The special train for Pittsburg
will leave the college next Wednes
day at 12:30. The return trip will
be made on Saturday, the time to
announced later. If 500 men use
the special train the round trip fare
will be $5.00; if less than 500, but
more than 150, $5.45.
On Wednesday night at 8:15 in
Memorial Hall, the combined mu;
sical clubs of Penn State and Pitt
will give a concert. Tickets for stu
dents only are 50 cents; regular
tickets $l. The concert will be
followed by a dance at the Hotel
Schenley, at which the subscription
is $2 a couple. On the same even
ing those who do not dance will be
able to join the reunion in the
English Room at the Fort Pitt Ho
tel. All Penn State alumni will also
be entertained at some time during
the evening by the Pittsburg alumni.
Mass meetings will be held on
Friday night of this week and on
Monday and Tuesday of next week.
All information about the trip may
be obtained at those meetings. The
chairmen of the class banquet com
mittees will be on hand to sell rail
road tickets and banquet menus,
while tickets to the concert and stu
dent tickets to the game will be on
sale at the same time. The special
tickets to the cheering secion at 50
cents will be sold to men only, and
only to Penn State men. The
authorities have given us the chance
to show Pittsburg what real cheer
ing is like, and it is the plain duty
of every man to be in the special
section "cheering his old head off."
The sale of grandstand seats will
close on Tuesday, but until then the
tickets may be obtained from
Graduate Manager Smith in Old
Main.
Now is the time for us to get to
gether for the last game of the best
football season Penn State ever had.
Let us show the people of Pittsburg
and our old alumni who will be
there, that the Blue and White has
not only one of the best teams in
the country this year, but also a
loyal body of rooters second to
none in the world. Everybody dig
in for the big game ! Attend the
mass meetings ; get the old spirit
going ; and then "let's go !" Here's
the cry, fellows : "One Thousand to
Pitt"!
Professor Gill Resigns.
Mr. A. H. Gill, Associate Profes
sor of Heat Engineering has re
signed, and will be, for the third
time in his career, with the Ameri
can Smelting and Refining Com
pany. He was first indentified
with that company in Denver, Col.,
later in Nevada, and has new ac
cepted the position of Superintend
ent of the Power Department at the
company's plant at Perth Amboy,
N. J. Prof. Gill has not only made
an enviable record with this com
pany, but has been equally success
ful in such other positions as he
has held. His work here has been
entirely satisfactory to the trustess,
the faculty and student body.
Prof. Gill's departure will be re
gretted by all who know him, and
many warm friends here wish him
the greatest success in his new
work. Before he leaves a farewell
dinner will be given him as a slight
token of the esteem in which he is
held. 1

Band Concert A Success
Last Sunday evening the Penn
State Cadet Band gave an excellent
concert in the Schwab Auditorium
before a crowd composed largely of
Pennsylvania 'Day guests. P. M.
Snavely directed the band in a
Sousa manner. The quality of
music was of the best and every
number was unanimously applaud
ed. Baritone solos rendered by
Alex Gray, 3rd in his usual smooth,
enjoyable style were highly ap
preciated by the large audience.
The program presented Sunday
evening - follows:—March, Slav
Tschaikowsky; Overture, Wilhelm
Tell, Rossini; Selection, Spring
Maid, Reinhardt; Baritone solo, (a)
Indian Love Lyric, Cadman, (b)
Four Leaf Clover, Willoby; Scarf
Dance, Chaminadr; Medley, Over
ture, Ted Snyder; March, Loyal
Americans, King.
WE WONDER.
Wh..t the Governor will think of
us now that he knows us better,
If the-Fort-Pitt Hotel will be able
to keep within iti walls the incom
parable college spirit which will be
aroused by the Penn State class
banquets.
If Pennsylvania Day was ever
more fittingly observed.
If, however, we shall ever be able
to celebrate that day with all ex
pected guests in full attendance.
If it would n A be well to avoid,
as much as possible, the paths al
ready noticeable on the campus,
If a thousand men or more should
not be on the job in Pittsburg on
Thursday.
Thanksgiving Recess
The following petition was
presented to the Faculty Council of
Administration Nov. 21st, 1911:
"The undersigned Chairmen of
the banquet committees of the
Senior. Junior, and Sophomore
classes respectfully petition for a
recess of all college work between
Wednesday noon, Nov. 29th, and
Saturday evening, Dec. 2nd, in
order that we may hold our annual
banquets in the City of Pittsburg.
If granted these days, the student
body will use its influence to main
tain good attendance on the preced
ing and following days and also be
fore and after the Christmas
vacation."
Upon motion, the petition was
granted. Nov. 21st, 1911,
A Word From Grenfell in Labrador
The following appeared in the
Grenfell Association Magazine
"Among the Deep Sea Fishers"—
"The young men of State College,
Pennsylvania, should be thanked for
their gift of good second hand
clothing which was donated through
the efforts of St. Margaret's Guild
of the Episcopal church.
We hope the college men will
keep their cast off clothing until
spring when another collection for
the Grenfell Association will be
made."
