The Following Letter Has Recently
Been Received From one of Our

I have been asked by the Sche
nectady Alumni Association at a
recent meeting to again place be
fore those men of the College who
are interested in publication the
somewhat antiquated but all the
more vital, t plea for State news in
the New York Papers. In 1907
there was talk of a Press Club and
what it could do if we had it. Has
there been one founded since ? If
so, can it do something along this
line ?
"Once a State Man always a State
Man", means that we, up here in
New York State, ate just as vitally
interested in the results of Saturday
games with Yale, Cornell, or Navy
as are you, who await but the word
to touch off a bonfire in celebration
of a victory. Don't we arise at
10 a. m. Sunday after the big
game, hail a boy with a paper, cut
church and scan every line with
hope ? But its always the same
thing. Every game flout Maine to
Washington or the Gulf from the
Padunk H. S. to the largest Uni
versity in the land all but State and
the team she happens to be playing
on that particular date.
Now that the football season is
on again our interest is once more
aroused. Can't you do something
for us? Won't the Associated
Press take State scores? They
might if some one would take the
trouble to see that they were sent
The fame of Penn State should
not be confined to Pennsylvania.
Her Alumni go all over the World,
why shouldn't at least those in a
neighboring State be able to g.t
news.

An Aid in Teaching of Modern ,
Languages.
Dr. Vietor of Marburg University I
Germany, advocates a system of
phonetics with which he says every '
teacher of modern languages should
be familiar, in order to teach the
correct position of the vocal organs in
the enunciation of sounds,so that pu
pils may learn to speak the languag
es intelligently. This system of Wil
helm Vietor has largely bee* , adopt
ed on the Continent and has also
been introduced at Harvard, the '
University of Wisconsin and the 1
Summer session for teachers at the
Pennsylvania State College.
Professors at Oxford and Cam- I
bridge are now working on the re
formation of English spelling ' usi ig
the Vietor system as a basis of
their endeavors. The only lady in j
the United States teaching this sys- 1
tern of rhonetics is Mi ss Lucretia j
Van Tuyl Simmons, Ph. D , M. A.
of the Pennsylvania State College,
who studied it in the Vietor School,
at Marburg.

Civil Service Examinations
We are in receipt of an announce
ment from the U. S. Civil Service
Commission calling at! e.ntion to the
regular fall examinations on October
18-19, 1911, for positions in the U.
S. Department of Agriculture. Ex
aminations will be given in the fol
lowing subjects: Agronomy, Dairy
ing, Entomology, Farm Manage
ment, Forage Crops, Horticulture,
Library Science, Physiology and
Nutrition of Men, Plant Breeding,
Plant Pathology, Pomology, Seed
Testing, Soil Surveying, Soil Bac
teriology and Animal Husbandry.
Peisons interested are invited to
communicate with the Civil Service
Commission, Washington, D. C.,
and full information regarding the
opportunities in the servix, scope
of examinations, salaries etc., will
be furnished.
We Wonder
