After the Valedictory the Bach
elors degrees will he conferred up
on the members of the graduating
class; and the candidates for
advanced degrees will receive them
also. A unique feature of the ex
ercises will• be the conferring of
honorary advanced degrees upon
the seven living members of the
first graduating class, 1861, of this
college. These seven will be here
celebrating their fiftieth annual
reunion. They are the Hon. John
U. Banks, Indiana, Pa., A. C.
Church, Luzerne, Pa., John W. Eck
man, Pulaski, Va., Milton S. Lytle,
Philadelphia, Pa., E. P. McCormick,
Germantown, Pa; C. A. Smith,
Chicago, 111., Colonel Chas. E.
Troutman, National Soldiers' Home
Tenn.; J. H. Isett, of Isett, Pa., a
former member of the Class of 61,
who left college two months before
graduation to join the army of Gen
el al Sherman, will receive both the
Ilachelor's and the advanced de
grees. Judge George B. Arlady,
at one time a member ,of the class
of '6B, will likewise receive , a
degi ee.
Prizes and commissions will
next be awarded. Dr. T. R, Baker,
of Rawlins College, who was a mem
ber of the Penn State faculty from
1859 to 1862, will receive an engrav
ed memorial booklet. An engraved
testimonial will be presented to
Prof. John Hamilton, who has been
treasurer of the college for thirty
five years. The class of 1900 will
formally present a portrait of the
late President Atherton.
Dr. Sparks will then_ make the
President's annual- statement, dis
cussing various developments of
the college. There will be several
important changes in the faculty
next year. Among the various
gifts to the college which will be
announced, one in particular will be an
especially agreeable surprise, though
We are not at present at liberty to
divulge the secret.
Class Day Exercises.
, On Monday of 'Commencement
week, June 12, the class of 1911
will hold their Class Day exercise.
The exercise will take place on the
campus, directly in front of Main
building, where a depression in the
lawn furnishes a natural amphithe
ater. This depression makes the
spot where the limestone in the
walls of Old Main was quarried,
and during the class -exercises a
memorial boulder will be dedicated
here,.
The program is to open with a
musical 'selection by the Penn State
Cadet Band, after which H. R.
Moffitt, 1911
,rl2-:- president, will
ms"Rarewell Address." The
huge pipe, which is each year hand
ed down to the class next lower,
will be nresented to 1912, and the
"Pipe Oration" delivered by J. M.
Spangler. Then the Presentation,
by R. E. Riblet„ will take place.
This event is always of great inter
est, though a source of apprehen
sion to the class" members, and this
year we' have an unusual treat in
store,
The senior custom of planting
ivy under the walls of some college li
building will be followed this year,
and the "Ivy Oration" will be deliv
ered by W. D. Meikle.
A more beautiful and inspiring
spot for such a gathering could not
be found--the beautiful campus,
with its shady trees and green
carpet of grass, and the walls of
Old Main in the back ground, are
surroundings beloved by the men
who are about to leave their Alma
Mater, The occasion itself is
joyous, yet sad, when one thinks
that it is practically the last meet
ing of the men about to leave their
classmates and their college.
To Aid Hospital Fund.
The class of 1913 has placed in
the hands of the hospital committee

of the State College Woman's clubs
a paper which its members have
signed to donatt its surplus damage
money for, the junior and senior
years to the college hospital, as a
nucleus for a College Hospital fund.
The two year specials have taken
similar action, and the class of 1914
has also voted the damage money
for this year to the same use, plac
ing the matter in the hands 'of a
special committee.
The action taken is one well
worth commendation. No more
valuable use could have been fourd
for the damage deposits, and the
donation will serve as a subitantial
nucleus for future work. ' The need
for an adequate hospital here has
long been apparent, and with such
worthy support from the members
of the classes named, vigorous
progress toward that end seems
assured. The hospital committee
of the Woman's club has been doing
excellent work up to the present
time, and this substantial aid from
1913 and the Specials will serve
further to encourage them in their
efforts.
