On last Fri- AtOy 'evening by defeating ciriiell our wrestling team gained the covet ed title of "Intercollegiate Cham pions," and the prowess of Penn State men in another branch of athletic activities was most pf-, cellently demonstrated. This branch of college athletics, wrestling, was not inaugurated here Limn the 'win ter of 1908-09 when only a single meet was held. However, since that time rapid advancement has been made, and last year application was made for entrance ' into the In- tercollegiate Association. But after considerable discussion ow appli- Cation was turned down. As a re sult of this slight ,chedk to our am bitions in 4 this line, our men, in stead of becoming dejected and giv ing up hope, redoubled their ef forts, and by long and ,consistent practice, an exceptionally strong team was developed with four clean cut vidtories , to its credit. It is no trivial third,► for any kind of a team to defeat teams representing such institutions as Yale and Cornell and we have special reason to be proud of our wrestling team when we con sider the fact that the trick was turned in our opponents' territory. In all probability anothcr application will soon be made to enter the In tercollegiate Association and it seems very probable that our appli cation will be acted upon favorably. Wrestling has been established up 'on'a solid basis and has obtained a strong. hold at Penn State. We honor every man on the team and rejoice together over the very suc cessful season. Appropriation Two weeks from to- Committee day, March 30, the Appropriation Committee of the Legislature will visit ,the college, and the appropriation which the college will receive will be largely determined by the impres sion made at this time. There will be no change in the regular college exercises on this date, foi it is the intention to take he commit tee around to the different schools and give them an idea of what the students here are doing, and at the same time demonstrate to them the congested conditions in the different departments as they actually exist However if any student is pei son ally acquainted with any membel of the committee he should if possible avail himself of the opportunity of entertaining such a member. Let eves y yellow do his best at this Death of Dr. Hitchcock On February 15, in Amherst, 1 , Mass., these passed away, at the ipe age of eighty-two, the man who made possible American athletics, Dr. Edwai d. Hitchcock. ' He devised the system of anthropological measurements which is used today in all colleges in America and in many foreign insti tutions, and which has been known as the "Amherst Idea." In 1885 he h•?.lped found the American as- / sociation for the advancement of physical education. For the first three years he was its president and for ten more years he served on its national counsel In 1901 this organization gave a dinner in his honor and passed the following resolution: "We express our judgment that ,the long contin ued and high place that has' been given to physical training at Am-' herst has been one of the strongest factors' in. .securing for physical training its present status, in educa tional circles." In 1905 the same association voted him' an honorary member, to gether with Dr. Sargent of Har vard, the Crown Prince of Sweden, Prof. Angelo Mosso of Turin, Italy, and Prof. F. S. Schmidt of Bonn, Germany. In this connection it may not be amiss to recall that the first. inter collegiate baseball game was played as far back as 1859, between Am herst and Williams with a score 73 to 32 in favor of 'Amherst. The Psychology of the Crowd. Dr. George E, Vincent, president - - elect of the University of Minne sota in his witty, rapid-fire, and brilliant lecture on the "Physcology of the Crowd," captivated the large audience last Saturday night in the Auditorium to the, extent that few will foiget this entertaining speaker. In dealing with this subject which appeared to be a serious one, Dr. Vincent approached it in such a manner that he made , cleat to the most stupid the principles of psychology. The ,reason an elo quent speaker with a marvelous control of language can keep the attention of a crowd of people was readily explained in a manner most satisfactory and yet humorous. Hypnotism or the concentration of thought was dealt with at length, but not practiced, Dr. Vincent tell ing how the mind can be controlled by one still stronger, providing the subject concentrates his mind on one thing, to the exclusion Of every thing else, The substance of the lecture while deep and instructive, was not in the least tiring to the audience. Inter spersed throughout the lecture were such ingenious remarks that the crowd burst forth in numerous sounds of laughter. The rapidity of Dr. Vincent's speech and his command of suitable words for ex pressing himself, combined with his remarkable flow of wit, stamp him as one of the best lecturers heard in • the free lecture course. Wireless Telegraph Investigations. The experiment station attached to the college has entered upon in vestigations in cooperation with the Elecuical Engineers of the Pennsyl vania Railioad in order to perfect a a system of wireless telegraphy to be used between stations. By means of other wireless stations, the idea of carrying out a practical line of ie - eatch is excellent. George 0.
