Mr. Heinrich Starcke gave . a
most nrcellent talk before the
Deutscher Verein last Friday even
ing, on the Gelman school system.
The descriptions of all the differ
ent grades of education, and of the
subjects treated at each period of
instruction were very interesting.
Mr. Starcke laid special emphasis
upon the higher schools, the Gym
nasium, the Realgymilasium, and
the Oberrealschule, and made his
descriptions accurate and attractive
throughout.
At the business meeting following
Mr. Starcke's talk, a number of im
portant matters were brought up in
regard to methods of governing the
organization during the coming
year, and respecting the annual.
play. A large number of new men,
principally from the freshman class,
have been admitted to membership,
and they are most cordially wel
comed to the society. At the
meetings in the near futuie, a great
deal of important business is to be
transacted, and it is essential that
all

present. ,

Varsity Basketball.
Candidates for the varsity basket
ball team have been practicing every
afternoon for the past ten days In
preparation for the hard games
scheduled for this winter. Captain
Blythe 'l2, McEntire 'll, Haddow
'l3, and Shore 'l3 are the members
of last year's team who have return
ed to college. About twenty-five
candidates have reported for prac
tice and several of the new men
look like promising varsity material.
The services of Dutch Herrhann and
Reed will be very much missed, as
they both were good, hard players
in the game from beginning to end.
Since it has been decided to con
tinue basketball, it is up to the
student body to turn out to the
games, support the team, and by so
doing make this season one of the
best in the history of Penn State.
