D., pastor of the Penn Avenue Baptist church, Scranton, Pa., has been se lected to preach the sermon before the graduating class, Sunday, June 13, 1909. Dr. Walker was gradu ated from the State University of lowa in 1883, receiving the degree of Bachelor of Arts, and in 1886 was given the degree of Master of Arts by the same institution. In 1889,' he received the degree of Bachelor of Divinity from the Uni versity of Chicago and the degree of Doctor of Divinity from Des Moines, lowa, College in 1901. He has held pastorates in New York, and in lowa, and was for four years pastor of the Epiphany church at Philadelphia. He went to Scranton last September and has built up a church membership of 1000, which is now erecting a building to cost $125,000. Dr. Walker is gaining a wide reputation for his thought and elo quence and will prove a most ac ceptable speaker for the Commence ment sermon. ' “Where Roosevelt Will Hunt.” On Saturday evening the winter course o¥ free lectures was closed by Mr. Carl E: Akeley;' who spoke on “Where Roosevelt Will Huni.’’ Mr Akeley is the official explorer and collector for the Field Museum in Chicago and is well acquainted with certain sections of Africa. The lecture was illustrated by excellent THE STATU COT/nr-XHAN pictures, thrilling and interesting. The points touched by Mr. Akeley and his large caravan, extended in land some great distance from Bcmbassa. The committee in charge of these free lectures this year are indeed to be congratulated and certainly de serve the thanks of the whole stu dent body for their efforts. The Turbine, The new turbine, which arrived just before Easter vacation, has been in operation nearly two weeks and has been giving entire satisfy c tion. It is carrying all of the load that the Willans engine carried, and more, with ample reserve, and when the Willans engine is repaired there will be power enough for any emergency, such as the extra lights at Commencement. The constant fear of inconvenience and delays due to breakdowns has at last been removed. New Instructor. The Mechanical Engineering de partment has been further strength ened by the'addition to its teaching force, of J. P. Calderwood. Mr. Calderwood is a graduate of Ohio State University, and received the degiee of M.‘ E. from that institu tion in 1908. Before coming here he held a fellowship in Experimental Engineering at his alma mater; and will work along the same line in the M. E. department, assisting in the laboratories. COLLEGE NOTES. Dean Crane of the School of Mines and Metallurgy has been asked by the Institution of Mining Engineers of Great Britan to give an address at the annual meeting to be held in London May 28th next. The topic upon which he is asked to speak is “The Use of Concrete in Mining.’’ This is an unusual compliment to a member of the faculty. Press work on the 1910 La Vie is progressing very favorably. Proof has been read for a considerable oortion, the binders are working on the new and attractive cover, and all indications point to its being on sale by June first,earlier than ever before. P. I. Wrigley ’O9 has been receiv ing congratulations since April 8,- for his marriage to Miss Alberta J. Dreibelbis of Pine Hall. The Col legian joins in with the ' rest and wishes a long and happy future for the bridal couple.
