Captain McCleary
Our schedule was one which no
team in the country would have tried
with the possible exception of the In
‘dians. It resulted in the disabling
of quite a number of varsity men,
and the final game in Pittsburg was
played without the services of cap
tain McCleary, halfback Ballou, left
guard McClellan and left tackle
Weaver. Yet the white . and blue won
on sheer merit in that final struggle
and no end of praise is due our play
ers for the true "State spirit" shown
in that game. It is very, likely that
next year will see a revision of the
schedule with fewer difficult con
tests, yet Penn State stands on such
good terms with all opponents that
-it is difficult to see just whom we can
drop. . ,
For the fifth consecutive season the
popular "Tommy" Fennell coached
the white and blue. During this
half decade our eleven has been re
turned a winner in 32 games, lost 17,
and tied one. Such is a record to
be proud of, but we are to lose the
THE STATE COLLEGIAN
Cornellian's valuable services since
he will be able to spend only a few
days on Beaver Field next fall. In
all orobabilitv the graduate system
of coachiig will be tried and State
is bound to make a success of this
plan just as she has surmounted like
difficulties before. Our alma mater
nas turned but some of the best
players who ever handled a football
on any gridiron, and these men will
come back to instill into our elevens
the State style of play—the ono that
has brought us victory after victory
and given Penn State a splendid
name the country over.
With Captain McCleary, one of
the fini'st players who ever wore a
Penn State uniform, out of almost
one half the games, "Larry" Vorhis
led the team this year as acting cap
tain with great success The little
New Yoiker is State's football cap
min for 1909. Here is our 'OB
record:
State 5, Bellefonte Academy 6,
on Beaver Field; State 31, Grove
(.ity 0, on Beaver Field; State 5,
Carlisle Indians 12, at Wilkes Barre;
State 0, University of Penna. 6, at
Philadelphia; State 51, Geneva 0,
on Beaver Field; State 12, West
Virginia University 0, on Beaver
Field; State 4, Cornell 10, at Ithaca;
State 33, Bucknell 6, on Beaver
Field; State 0; Navy 5. at Annap
olis; State 12, University of Pitts
burg 6, at Pittsburg.
Games won, by State 5; Lost 5.
Points scored, by State 153; op
ponents 51.
Opening Basketball Game
Last Friday evening our basket
ball five opened its season at the
Armory with a fine victory over the
Harrisburg Athletic Club. The
visitors had an all-college aggrcga
tion with Mc Cormick of Bucknell,
Johnson of Princeton and Gaffney
of West Virginia University in their
lineup. A clean article of basket
ball was furnished by the team from
the capitol city and at times their
passing was brilliant, but the white
and blue overwhelmed and out
played them at ail points.

Basketball Prospects.
With captain Funston, Hermann,
Waha, Reed, ana Barnett—all bas
ketball "5" men—now in school,
there is a sturdy nucleus around
which to build up our 'oB—'o9 five.
Amidon. Davis, Mclntyre, Arm
strong, and Harrington are members
of last year's scrub team who are
again out for the varsity, while there
is also a goad crop of new candidates.
Gotschall, who played well for F.
& M against State in two games last
season, is showing up well at for
ward. James at guard and Hoerle
at forward, both Johnstown High
School candidates, are also making
a good impression with their work.
Barr, end on this season's football
eleven, Blythe of Philadelphia (Cen
tral) H. S., Cooper, McKee and
Doster are other men who are trying
for places on the team. Altogether
the prospects for a team which can
equal last year's excellent record of
ten victories out of fourteen games
played are favorably encouraging.
The only cloud in a bright sky at
present is the injury to "Jimmy"
Funston, the brilliant little leader,
who may be kept out of the game
with his bad knee. With captain
McCleary on the injured list in at
least one-half of the important foot
ball games this fall and Funston in
jured at the begiming of the basket
ball season, the fates appear to have
a grudge against the white and blue
captains.
This year's schedule is one of the
best 'we have ever had. Games
with Allegheny, West Point, and
the University of Pittsburg have
been arranged for the first time.
Among the others are Penn, George
Washington, Bucknell, F. & M.,
Swarthmore, and Manhattan.
