that persons after handing in their names are in no way bound to join the organization, or to in any way obligate themselves. It is hoped that every person who believes in this proposed addition to our facilities for pleasant associa tions and delightful exercise will hand his name to Professor Shattuck at once, and will attend the pre liminary meeting irrespective of whether his conditions will later justify him in joining the organized association. Mr. J. E, Quigley, a trustee of our college and an active alumnus, has agreed to act with other mem bers of the alumni association, and to take this matter up with the alum ni in much the same manner as the proposed movement is being started here. Special Lectures on Forestry by William L. Hall. Mr. William L. Hall, Chief of the Branch of Products of the United States Forest Service, who gives the first of the Free Lecture Course ad dresses on the evening of December 18, has very kindly consented to give four special lectures for stu dents of the college who are inter ested in Forestry. The subjects of these lectures will be as follows : I. The Reorganized Forest Serv- 11. The Field and Methods of the Branch of Products. 111. The Work of the Govern ment in Wood Utilization. IV. The Work of the Govern. ment in Wood Preservation. These lectures will be given in the Forestry Building on Friday, Dec. 18 at the following hours : Lecture 1-9:20; Lecture 11-11:20; Lecture 111-1:30; Lecture IV•4 o'clock. Every man in the college who is interested in any one of the subjects presented, whether especially inter ested in Forestry or not, is invited to be present. THE STATE COLLEGIAN A High Honor for Dr. Armsby. In connection with the Inter national Live Stock Exposition at Chicago, there was held on November 28, a meeting of those college and experiment station work ers more especially interested in in vestigation in stock feeding. About thirty were present, representing Experiment Stations trom Massa chusetts to California and from Minnesota to Alabama. The meet ing grew out of a conference of in vestigators in this subject, held at Cornell University last summer dur ing the Graduate Summer School of Agriculture, and resulted in the formation of the American Society of Animal Nutrition. Dr. H. P. Armsby, director of the Institute of Animal Nutrition in connection with the college was chosen. president. The objects of the society, as stated in the constitution which was adopted, are to improve the quality of investigation in animal nutrition, to pi omote more systematic and better correlated study of feeding problems, and facilitate personal in tercourse between investigators in this field. In addition to holding an annual meeting, the society proposes to take up actively the consideration of methods of investigation and later to enter upon cooperative study of important problems of stock feeding. To this end, a standing committee on experiments and two special committees on methods were pro vided for. The committee appoint ed at the Cornell conference pre sented a full report outlining the work to be undertaken. 'The officers of the new Society are: president, H. P.
