Beaver Field. It is with pained surprise that our Alumni noted in a recent issue of The Collegian that no decision has as yet been reached as to whether or not State's splendid new ath letic field is to be called Beaver Field. Throughout all the history of our College, two magnificent men stand pre-eminent as leading spirits and guides for the scores of stout hearts that have wrought for the welfare of Old State, Dr. Atherton and General Beaver! For two decades the men who have carried our College colors to victory have loved the name of Beaver field, and today, the mention of the name brings to the mind of every Penn State man—alumnus or undergraduate—the heroic figure of our good old General, a friend to every son of State. To think of such a friend as he, is an inspira tion to higher, better things. Let us by all means commemor ate the life long work of Dr. Ather ton is some fitting manner; likewise let us not forget General Beaver by permitting any change in the name of our athletic field. It will truly be a great field, and worthy of a great name, and no name is worthier, more honored, more respected, and more beloved, than that borne by General James A. Beaver. The Collegian suggests that the names East Field and West Field may be applied to the new fields. Of what significance are such names as these? And to come squarely to the point, why is any change of name suggested at all? Surely State's alumni and under graduate; should have some voice in the naming of their athletic field, and if this question were put to vote in the student body and among the alumni, the good old name of Beaver Field will unanimously be preserved.
