Penn's Cave. The passing of the snow and ice and the increasing warmth of the sunshine remind us that spring is al most here. As a natural conse quence many students look forward to the time when they can make short trips into the surrounding country for an afternoon's or a day's recreation. A trip well worth while, but which takes a whole day, is the one to Penn's Cave, situated fifteen miles up Penn's Valley. Some peo ple reach it by rail to Spring Mills, and then drive four miles, but most of the visitors drive all the way. The drive alone is worth the time spent, for an ever-changing scenery makes it very interesting. To get out in the mountains on a fine road and in a beautiful country, partly wild and partly civilized, is an enjoy ment that none should let pass. The outward aspect of the cave is not imposing for it is merely a large hole in the side of the mountain, surrounded by forest land. But when once inside, the visitor gets a greater impression. It is a lime stone cave of great beauty contain. ing many stalactites and stalagmites, and affording much material for geological study. There are two caverns, one small one being dry, while the other, with an area of forty or fifty acres, is a lake with an un known depth. Visitors at present make the exploration in a large boat holding about twenty persons, with gasoline torches for light, but the recent change in management gives assurance that modern inprovements will be made soon. Two State men, R. P. Campbell, 'O4, of Toledo, and H. C. Camp bell, 'OO, of Philadelphia, recently purchased the cave and 210 acres of property, including the hotel, and intend to improve the place and ad vertise it throughout the state as a mountain summer resort. The park which will be made will include forest land and meadow.
