The action of the senior class in deciding to re-establish the old cus- torn of wearing caps and gowns at Sunday chapel during the last few weeks of the college year is a most commendable one. As a whole, State has an abundance of customs and traditions, but very few are of an academic nature. As such, this new departure forms a distinct and welcothe addition to our college life. In this connection many expres sions of regret have been heard that the faculty has this year ceased wearing gowns on anniversary occa sions. They lend an air of dignity to the services which can be gained in no other way. IHE STATE COLLEGIAN With the Delaware college game last Friday the basketball season came to a fitting close with a record that has not been equalled in recent years. A total' of four defeats, not one of which was on our own floor, sets a standard tor future teams which will be hard to excell. The faithful, consistent work of Captain Dußarry and his squad has made this splendid achievement possible and it is all the more commendable because accomplished in the face of adverse conditions and with prac tically no outside coaching. All honor to the team! Sophomore-Freshman Basbetball. This week marked the beginning of practice by the sophomore and freshman squads. The managers decided that the Sophomores should have Tuesday, Thursday and Satur day nights of each week for prac tice, and the freshmen the other three. The calls for candidates brought out a large field to pick from in each class. The sophomore candidates are the four varsity men, Hermann, Reed, Ross, and Funston, the scrubs, Wickham and Armstrong, and the sophomore league stars, Humes, McKee, Sloan, Schein, Parke, Buka, Davies, and Bitten bender. The freshmen have a larger hum ber to choose from. So far this week there has been twenty six men on the squad, but from these the squad will soon be cut down to nearly half. The following men are out: McClellan, Brown, Barnett, Harrington, Yeckley, Steitfurth, E. F. Davi;, Main, A. D. Miller, Rogers, McEntire, Long Kepner, Towell. Page, Obert, J. H. Miller, Mathers, Nelson, Campbell, Lud• wig, H. D. Davis, J. W. Miller, Ressell, Amidon, and Lemith. The captain of the freshman team will be elected at the Friday night practice. The date of the game has not been finally decided, but the senti ment is that it should be played before the end of next week so that the account can be put in the 1909 La Vie. "Daddy" Groff. A movement has been started in college to raise among the. under graduates the salary of G. W. Groff, 'O7, who is teaching in the Canton Christian College, China. Canton is the largest city of the Orient, the lo est possible estimate of its population being two million. Five million would probably be nea:er the truth. The college is located on the bank of the Pearl River, three miles from the city, and is a thoroughly modern institu tion with a faculty of ten and a stu dent body of 110. It is bound to grow rapidly, and the plans now laid contemplate a magnificent university of the American type. The Uni versity of Pennsylvania now main tains two alumni at the college as teachers of medicine, and is pro viding for a medical building. The amount to be raised for Groff's salary alone is $850.00, and of this amount $439.50 was sub scribed on last Sunday evening. If every undergraduate would sub scribe a dollar, the amount would be reached easily. A large majority of the men seen last Sunday were glad to make their subscription, and the spirit shown by men who are working their way through college was splendid. More than one such subscribed his ten dollars. State certainly may be proud to be repre sented in China by such a man as Groff..and our college could do no better than to guarantee his entire support as long as he is at Canton. This year is an experiment, and if the college rallies to the support of its alumnus, we can assume his salary as a yearly thing. _
