THE STATE COLLEGIAN
BASKETBALL SEASON CLOSES.
A Victory Over Delaware College
Ends a Well Played Schedule.
Another splendid exhibition of
basketball was given when the Dela
ware College five was defeated on
the Armory floor. last Friday night
by the score of 47 to 11. The game
was inclined to be rough at several
stages but Referee Mcllvee 1' s
whistle always sounded at the right
time and kept the contest interesting
throughout. ahe clever passing and
teamwork of captain Dußarry and
his men could not be surpassed and
the ease which they seemed to have
in taking the ball from their oppon
ents was very much in evidence.
The Delaware team put up a plucky
fight but they were greatly out
classed and could not do much in
the matter of scoring.

It was hoped to have Buck - mil
here for a game this season and
it seems that this was the under
standing before we met them
at Lewisburg, but last week the
Bucknell management stated that by
faculty action their team was not al
lowed any trips, This is all the
more disappointing because it was
felt that our defeat of two weeks
ago could have been avenged in a
game on the home floor.
State me a may well feel proud of
their basketball representation for
the season of 1908. A team that
has developed as the present one
has without a coach is to be con
gratulated most highly and the skill
they have attained in swift and ac
curate passing, as well as the team
work displayed, is absolutely the
best ever shown by a Penn State
team. The individual playing nas
shown that we have a collec
tion of stars and, although we
lose Captain Dußarry next year,
such men as Waha, Funston, Her
mann, Reed and Ross will form the
nucleus of a team of which great re
sults can be expected. Manager
Harding also deserves great credit
for his services, as well as "Casey"
Fox, "Turk" Dillon and the other
members of the squad, for the inter
est taken in helping to develop a
winning team.
Despite the extremely unfavora
ble weather conditions, a very large
number of men have reported for
track work, and are hard at it.
This year's prospects are excellent
for a strong track team. The new
material has so far been showing up
well, and as soon as the track gets
in good condition great things are
expected of the squad.
Of last year's team there are still
a large number in college, and it
will be around them that the new
team will be built. In the quarter
mile, especially, the candidates are
numerous, and a fine relay team will
probably be the outcome.
The most promising candidates
for the dashes thus far are Bubb,
Geyer, and Bair. The quarter has
Bedale, Miller, Berry, Hassan, and
many more. For the half there are
Hay, O'Neil, Mathers, Metzger,
and others.

The distances have practically the
same men as last year: Smith,
Ogilvie, Berkebile, Von Senden,
Martin, and a number of new men.
The weight events have the same
men as last year: Dunn, Cyphers,
Hirshman, Hand, Ritchey, and
others who entered this year.
The pole vault has Maurhoff and
Zink of last year's team, and Har
rison, Breitinger, and Graham, new
candidates.
All departments have numerous
candidates, and altogether the team
promises to be a strong one.
