Additions to the Nittany Power
Plant.
The plant of the Nittany Light,
Heat, and Power Company has
been enlarged during the last few
months to provide for some new
apparatus which, it i., expected, will
be in running order when the college
opens after the Christmas holidays
The new apparatus consists of a
110 H. P. Westinghouse three cyl
inder gas engine, direct connected
to a 60 K. W., two phase, 2200
volt Westinghouse alternator; a 150
H. P. new type R. D. Wood suction
gas producer, which will utilize pea
or buckwheat coal; an R. D. Wood
flask boi!er for obtaining steam to
be used in connection with the pro
ducer and for various necessary
auxiliary purposes.
With this large increase the plant
will have its capacity more than
doubled, for at present it consists
merely of a 70 H. P. Fairbanks—
Morse gas engine with producer,
generator, switchboard, etc. It is
believed that good service can be
rendered for such loads as will be
required by the village for some
time to come.
One of the reasons for selecting
the suction gas producer type of
plant was to give experimental ap
paratus Eor student work, and at the
same time rurnish lighting service to
the town. Because of more or less
unnecessary interference, this has
been found unsatisfactory with the
present small unit, but with the ad
ditions now made such experimental
work will be possible without in
terference, and should be of much
service to those making a special
study of gas engines and their com
mercial use.
