    STATE COLLEGE NOTES
The Thanksgiving dance to be
given by the senior class will take
place on Friday evening in the
Armory. Oppenheim's orchestra
will furnish the music.
At meetings of the underclasses
held last week the managers of the
class football teams were chosen:
L. V. Stephens for 1910 and Bubb
for 1911. Practice will probably
begin soon.
Two very interesting and instruc
tive lectures were delivered by Dr.
Oswald Schreiner of the U. S.
Bureau of Soils during the past
week. His subject, "The Influence
of Organic Compounds on Plant
Life," was of great interest to agri•
cultural and forestry students and
were well attended.
The college has purchased 197
acres of land known as the Edmis
ton farm adjoining the northern side
of 'the present property. This will
enable entended agricultural work to
be undertaken, and will provide
space for the planting of a large
apple orchard to replace that
destroyed to make room for the new
athletic field. The campus and farm
lands now consist of nearly 600
acres.
The Step ens Institute Indicator
for October contains an article by
Prof. A. J. Wood of the M, E.
department. It is entitled 'A
Study . of the Heat-Losses in a
Gasoline Engine," and was also
pi esented as a paper before the
Ithaca meeting of the Association
for the Advancement of Science.
The tests .were made on the 5 H.
P. Otto engine in the hngineering
building. The Entropy-Tempera
ture di.gram in connection with the
article is an original idea of Prof.
Wood. He has also included some
results of tests forming part of the
graduation theses of W. H. and C.
H. Williams 'O6, and M. N. Lower
'O6.
