The Indian Game.
State met defeat at the hands of
the Indians in a fast game of foot
ball at Williamsport last Saturday
by the score of 18 to 5. The In
dians outweighed State by a con
siderable margin and their team
work due to their long football
careers was very much in evidence.
Aside from a good many remarks in
regard to the unsatisfactory work of
the officials and to Coach Warner's
tactics along the sidelines, the game
was very much enjoyed by the
crowd of 4000 or more spectators.
A noteworthy feature of the game
was the excellent cheering done by
State's 800 undergraduates who
seemed never to lose faith in the
team. A hundred Bucknell students
also cheered for the White and
Blue.
The Indian squad of 40 men were
first on the field and their appear
ance won much applause which was
hardly distinguishable, however,
amid the deafening roars which
greeted State's squad of 25 men,
who soon followed.
Referee Dunbar soon called the
teams together for final instructions
in regard to the game and a circle
was formed for the toss, which the
Reds Kins won. They defended the
west goal with a stiff wino in their
favor.
At the whistle McCleary kicked
off to Hauser who ran back to the
30 yard line. Hauser gained but 5
yards on two downs and Mt. Pleas
ant kicked 45 yards to McCleary
who sped back 10. At this point
State was like a whirlwind to the
Indians as Maxwell skilled left end
for 20 yards, McCleary 15, then
none and Larry made 10 around

right end. McCleary 5, Vorhis 6,
Hirshman made 3 but lost 1 on the
next try, and State was given 5
yards for offside playing. Smith
circled tackle for 3 and State was
here penalized 13 yards for holding.
Maxwell made 17 on a forwaid pass,
Smith 1, and Burns iurnbled a for
ward pass but Smith fell on the ball
for State. This should have
been a first down for State with a
good chance to .core but the official
failed to see it that way and gave the
Indians the ball on their 9 yard line
by a margin of 2 inches. On the
first line-up Mt. Pleasant kicked 50
yards to Vorhis who went back 8.
The Indians got the ball on a for
ward pass and then a fake kick and
forward pass by Mt. Pleasant netted
25 yards. Hauser made 8, Hen
dricks 8, and a fumble gave State
the ball on her 21 yard line amid
great cheers. McCleary at once
kicked 35 yards but by a series of
rushes the co',per hued men carried
the ball to State's 35 yard line where
Hauser missed a try at goal from
placement. McCleary kicked out
from the 25 yard line and the In
dians again got 18 on a forward pass
out fumbled the next, Weaver fall
ing on th• ball for State. McCleary
again kicked and on the first play
Hendricks got away for what looked
to be a touchdown but a fine tackle
by Vorhis floored him on State's 16
yard line, in which the plucky
quarterback got a kick an the head.
At this point the Nittany Lions held
and Hauser succeeded in scoring a
placement kick from the 23 yard
line. Score 4to 0.
McCleary kicked off to Exendine
on the 25 yard line who ran back 8.
Hauser failed to gain and Mt. Pleas-
ant kicked 35 yards to Hirshman
who was downed in his tracks.
Winnie went in for Hendricks and
on the first play "Bull" McCleary
got through the Indian line for a
beautiful 70 yard run - for a touch
down: Zink failed to hold the ball
on the kicitout and the score stood
State 5, Indians 4.
Mt. Pleasant kicked off to Mc-
Cleary who brought the ball back
22 yards. McCleary immediately
kicked 25 against the wind and
Smith downed the redman where he
stood. From here the ball was
juggled back and forth until Burns
blocked Hauser's attempt at place
ment from the 50 yard line and got
the ball. State failed to gain and
McCleary punted 25. On a forward
pass Exendine got away for a 35
yard run for a touchdown. Mt.
Pleasant kicked the goal, making
the score 10 to 5. Shortly after
this, time ended for the first half.
SECOND HALF
As the teams went on the field for
the second half, Grey was at center
for State, Haverstick at quarter
back, Coulsun in left half, and Hirsh
man at fullback, while Lubo replaced
Exendine, who went to right end
for the Indians. Mt. Pleasant kicked
off to McCleary on the 5 yard line
who sped back 22. McCleary made
1 then punted 40 yards to the fleet
footed Mt. Pleasant who went back
20 and was brought down by Ritch
e'. The Redskins netted 21 yards
on line plays and were penalized 15
yards for holding. They then made
33 yards on a forward pass and
line plunges which brought the ball
to State's 17 yard line from which
Hauser kicked another goal from
placement. Score 14 to 5.
