    The Mining Department
: The Mining School has opened the
current college year with a promis
ing number of students. It has
been a great source of disappoint
inent to every student, however, to
hear of Dr\yadsworth's resigna
tion which will taketfect next June.
The great work which this highly es
teemed member of our faculty has
accomplished here is quite well
known to everyone. He will take
charge of the School of Mines at the
Western University of Pennsylvania.
Work has been begun on the ex
tension to the Mining Building. The
metallurgical laboratory will be ex
tended two hundred fec.t to the sear
. for work in ore aressing and coal
washing. The southern end of the
building is to be extended one
hundred eighty-six feet to provide
for a museum and class rooms.
Plans for an addition to the northern
end have also been made.
Mr. H. I. Smith, 'o7,will assist in
the metallurgical laboratories while
taking post graduate work.
The 1909 Memorial.
During the summer vacation the
stone wnich is a memorial to Dr.
Atherton from the class of 1909 was
placed on his grave beside the
Auditorium. It is a fine piece of
Barie granite covering the entire
grave and is very plainly lettered.
The effect is one of quiet dignity
and simplicity. This memorial was
given by the junior class from the
damage funds returned in their
sophomore year. The damage fund
''or the junior and senior years is to
be held in bust ln the college, and
Will be used to provide some useful
