EDITORIAL
The next issue of the Collegian
will appear on Thursday April 11th.
The spring vacation will be de
clared on Wednesday, March 27th
at 11 a. m. and . will extend to the
same hour on Wednesday April 3rd.
In a few days the baseball team
will leave for Mercersburg to open
the season of 1907. From the initial
game State will have to put forth
every energy as the schedule is
longer and more difficult than any
that has every been arranged for a
Penn State nine.
All indications point to an em
inently successful season and we
hope that it will turn out well, mak-
ing this a banner year in State’s
athletics,
Visitors to the college are usually
impressed with the abundant college
spirit displayed by our undergradu-
THE STATE COLLEGIAN
ates, but many have mentioned the
lack of a strong, stirring college
song, a much prized possession of
our sister institutions. Those who
have heard Princeton’s “Old Nas
sau” sung with all the reverent
earnestness accorded it by the ad
herents of the Tiger will appreciate
what it means to a college to pos
sess such a heritage.
We have two songs, neither of
which is much used or highly valued
by the majority of our student body.
The reason most often assigned for
this state of affairs is that the tunes
of both lack the dash and spirit
necessary for a successful college
song. Since new music would
probably necessitate a revision of
the words now in use, the best
remedy would seem to be the adop
tion of an entirely new song. Now
Penn State is big enough and strong
enough to be worthy of the best ef
forts of the composer, and let us
hope that before another college
year opens we may have a song
which will express in full measure the
love and loyalty that every son of
State feels towards his Alma Mater.
To this end the Collegian invites
suggestions as to the improvement
of our present songs or the adop
tion of a new one. The Co-op
prize of fifty dollars is avail
able for the latter object. By all
means let us have a college song
that we can use gladly and with
some spirit.
Debating Club.
The question discussed last Sat
urday evening at the meeting of the
Debating club was: Resolved that
State College should establish a
course in domestic science for the
benefit of the young women of
Pennsylvania. The chosen debateis
were McCoy ’lO and Miller ’O7,
affirmative; and Dry ’OB, and
Gross ’O9, negative. Both sides
presented many very forciole argu
ments and when the debate was
thrown open for general discussion
every man availed himself of the
opportunity to air his opinions on
the subject. The judges decided in
favor of the affirmative.
Fisher ’lO, talked on current
events and A. M. Myers ’OB, on
parliamentary law.
A debate has been arranged for
the second team with Juniata Col
lege. The question will be the same
as that which will be debated by
the first team with Dickinson.
