The STATE COLLEGIAN invites letters,
but the publication of a communication does
not necessarily imply the endorsement of the
sentiments contained therein. As a guaran
tee of good faith, the writer's name must be
signed, but will not be printed if so desired.
A Suggestion.
At lasfa change has been made
in the "ad" of our College on the
cover of the Collegian. The al
most pre-historic "ad," which read
"The Pennsylvania State College
Aims to Give
A Liberal Education
A Practical Education
A Sound Education
A Thoroughly Modern Educa
tion of the Best Type"
has been revised to the form as
you will now find it on the cover of
this paper.
The question is, why do we need
any apologies in our College "ads"?
In the old form it apologized by us
ing the word "Aims." Now the
"ad" writer goes one degree further
and makes two apologies, --
"Will hereafter endeavor to main
tain," and the entire last paragraph.
Why these apologies ?
This "ad" is not for the graduates
or undergraduates, but is, if it is to
serve its mission, to place the Col
lege before the prospective student,
and especially those who are com
paring our institution with similar
institutions. This comparison is
made from their representatives—
the advertising literature. The edu
cational advantages offered by a
College, or University, is as much
merchandise to a prospective stu
dent as a piece of machinery is to a
prospective purchaser.
The Pennsylvania State College
needs to make no apolgies. We
have the "goods." Place them be
fore the people in the' right manner
and the one thousand mark will soon
be as far behind the times as the
Farmers' High School now is behind
The Pennsylvania State Collge.
