STATE COLLEGE, PA., OCTOBER 11, 1906
Eight Senior Mechanicals have
chosen for their thesis, tests on the
State College suction-gas producer
plant, which has been fitted up at
considerable expense for thorough
investigation work. It is proposed
to study various methods of eco
nomical picciuction of power, the
whole question being one of wide
nteiest among engineers in this
country and abroad. Messrs.Mum
ma, Norton, Partridge, Stair and
Rittenhouse will make tests with dif
ferent fuels and Messrs, Kerr, Mar
tin and Wilson are to investigate the
economy of piping back part of the
exhaust into the producer and doing
away with the steam from the va
porizer commonly used in plants of
this type. Mr. George H. Barrus
of Boston, the well known steam ex
pert, recently made tests of a plant
in which the dry coal consumption
per brake house-power per hour was
reduced from 1.8 to 1.12 by charg
ing the exhaust as noted above and
increasing the compression of gas
engines. The Barrus tests are the
only ones recorded in which this
important change has been made in
the arrangement of the plant. The
tests made on the State College
plant last yea' showed that the cost
of fuel per I.H.P. was .525 cents.
At the Sophomore class meeting
held last week it was decided to
have a banquet in Williamsport on
Friday November 16th, the day be
fore the Dickinson game. It was
also decided to adopt a class pipe,
and a committee was appointed to
select several styles to pi esent to the
class.

State 0 -Gettysburg 0
Last Saturday for the first time
in State's twenty years of foot ball
history, a 'Varsity eleven was
played to a stand still on Beaver
Field. The plucky, aggressive
team from Gettysburg college ac
complished this feat in their great
0 to 0 game, and Captain Sieber and
his men may well feel proud for
they played splendid foot ball, all
through this memorable struggle of
two hard-fought 25 minute halves.
Never before have State's students
seen their team unable to cross the
goal line on Beaver Field.
As mentioned above, this present
season makes the twentieth in State's
gridiron annals, and during this
period the elevens representing the
"White and Blue" have won no less
than fifty-five foot ball games upon
Beaver Field, with never a defeat
nor tie game to mar the record.
Gettysbui g, accordingly, deserves
unlimited credit for holding State's
team to such a valiantly fought tie
struggle.
A finer punting duel has never
been seen here, as both McCleary
and Sieber averaged over 40 yards,
State's half-back, punting eleven
times, and Gettysburg's captain no
less than fourteen times. In the
first half, State's backs were greatly
bothered by thesun in catching punts,
and made several fumbles which
aided the visitors greatly. As for
total yards gained from line-up,
State made 192 to Gettysburg's
total of 96.
Of Gettysburg's total ground
gained from line-up, Sieber made
60 yards in a beautiful run on a
double pass late in the second-half,
only a flying tackle by Vorhis sav-
