    State Loses to Navy—Records
Smashed
On Saturday last the State track
team met the United States Naval
Academy team at Annapolis, and
was defeated by the score of 61 1-2
to 34 1-2.
The - meet was extremely fast
from start to finish, and the events
were hotly contested. The Navy
won not because of any hard hick
on State's part. 'but because the
Middies had the faster team and
were able to "produce the goods."
Records galore were smashed;
four by the Navy and one by Kaiser
of State, who lowered the half-mile
time from 2:02 1-5 to 2:01 3-5. ,
For the Navy, Midshipman Carey
of Maryland was the star, running
the 100 yard-dash in' 9 4-5 seconds
this lowering the Academy record
of 10 seconds, and covering the
220 yard distance in 22 seconds flat,
thus breaking the former Navy
record of 22 1-5 seconds.
In the 440 yard dash Purnell,
Navy, won out in 50 4-5 seconds,
breaking the previous Academy
mark of 52 4-5 seconds, while Ran
kin, Navy, lowered the mile-record
from 4:45 to 4:381-5.
Strayer had an easy victory in
the pole-vault at 10 feet 2 1-2 inches,
Zink, State, and Abbot, Navy, ty
ing for second place. "Mother"
Dunn was in good form in the
hammer throw, hurling the weight
118 feet 2 inches, exceeding the
Navy record ; but the Middies took
both places in the shot put.
In the jumps the cadets were easy
victors, though Brewster took
second place in the high-jump, there
by.winning the Varsity "S," after
having taken a place in the Indian
meet of the week before.
The fellows were royally treated
during their stay in Annapolis, be
ing entertained in Bancroft Hall of
the Naval Academy, and having all
the privileges of the grounds and

buildings. It is not pleasant to lose,
but we cannot always win, and the
sting of defeat is removed in losing
to such gentlemanly opponents.
