    Dr. Wadsworth on Lecture Tour.
The following clipping was taken
from last Thursday’s issue of the
Miners’ Journal of Pottsville, Pa.
The P. &R. Coal and Iron Co.
lecture at the old Methodist church,
Second street, last night, was heard
by one of the largest audiences of
the season. Fully 800 men, most
of them employees of the Company,
were in attendance, and the closest
attention was given Prof. M. E.
Wadsworth of State College, whose
subject was, ‘ ‘ Some of Our Common
Minerals and Rocks. ” Prof.
W T adsworth has made a life-long
study of minerals and geology, and
is at the head of the Mining Depart
ment at The Pennsylvania State
College, which is in a most flourish
ing condition. The Professor’s talk
was an interesting and instructive
one, especially to those who are
dealing with similar minerals in their
general line of work. ”
The speaker began by discussing
in general our most common min
erals, stating the practical uses of
each. He did not confine his talk
to such as were found in this State,
but embraced in his lecture the most
common of those of our county.
The Professor told how to dis
tinguish gold and copper pyrites
from each other and from other
minerals of like appearance. Cop
per and silver were next treated and
the distinguishing qualities of each
fully discussed. Lead ores _ were
also treated. It was next shown
how quartz and diamonds can be
discriminated.
Prof; Wadsworth’s lecture was
illustrated by stereoptican views un
der the direction of Gilbert B'retz,
who has conducted this feature at
every lecture. The excellent views
greatly aided the Professor in a
clear demonstration of the points
under discussion.” Similar items
appeared in the Tamaqua, Ashland,
Shamokin and Reading papers.

Foot Ball Changes,
Last Saturday, the Intercollegiate
Football Rules Committee met at
New York for further discussion of
football rules. One of the changes
decided upon was the shortening of
halves from 35 to 30 minutes, and
providing for an intermission of 10
minutes. The report of a sub-com
mittee on a central board of officials
was received and discussed. It was
voted to recommend the adoption of
a plan providing for the appointment
of central boards in different sections
of the country in order to introduce
the new system. The sub-commit
tee was instructed to get opinions
from the best known officials in the
country as to the best methods of
carrying out the proposed idea, and
to submit plans for the same at the
next meeting, set for March 30.
‘‘Holding — The players of the
side that has possession of the ball
shall not hold, block or otherwise ob
struct the opponent except with the
body. The only allowable use of
the arms in blocking or obstructing
an opponent is with the arms close
to the body. A player runn ng with
the ball may ward off an opponent
with the hands. The penalty for
holding will be a loss of fifteen yards.
‘‘Hurdling in the open field is pro
hibited; such to consist of jumping
over an opponent who is still on his
feet. Hurdling through the line is
prohibited. Hurdling the line is
jumping or attempting to jump over
a player on the line of scrimmage
with the feet or knees foremost, with
in the distance of five yards on ei
ther side of the point where the ball
was snapped.
