The Carnegie Gift.
Perhaps the most gratifying news
for the College world last week was
the donation by Mr. Andrew Car
negie of $10,000,000 in U. S. Steel
Bonds for the purpose of providing
annuities for aged college profes
sors. The bonds, which will pro
duce a revenue of $500,000 yearly,
will be transferred to a board of di
rectors, composed chiefly of college
presidents, who shall have complete
charge of the distribution of this
money. This board shall be main
tained by elections, all the colleges
receiving the benefit of the gift being
entitled to a vote at these elections.
Only the strictest of sectarian
schools and such State institution as
wish to mantain their relations exclu
sively with the state government,
shall be excluded by the conditions
of the donation. This is one of the
worthiest gifts of that great Penn
sylvania philanthropist and it has
received a flood of favorable com
ments among education.
At the University of Nebraska
a squad of fifteen is kept in mental
and physical training for two months,
preliminary to selecting two teams
of three each for inter-collegiate de-
