American has a far better knowledge
of the politics, people, history, and
material progress of the United States.
Let us therefore take measures to re
ciprocate and so increase this interest.
The present is most opportune for in
augurating a new era in the study of
Latin America, because, under the
Administration of President Roose
velt and his announced policy, in whom
and which the Latin States have great
confidence, remarkable progress is
sure to be made in evolving better in
ternational relations.
I wish that the students of our col
leges and universities would take up
the study of the Spanish language as
they do French and German, and an
other year I hope to offer correspond
ing prizes to promote the study of that
tongue, which in the future may be
more useful to the young American
than either French or German.
In submitting this offer, I desire to
name yourself, Dr. Albert Shaw, and
President John H. Finley, if you and
they will.serve, as a committee to ar
range and promulgate the terms and
limits of the competition. Whatever
expense is attached to acquainting the
various colleges with the offer and
completing arrangements for a suc
cessful competition I shall gladly meet.
The sum might be divided, if you
think best, into three prizes, respec
tively of $lOO, $75, and $5O, but I do
not insist upon it. Yours very respect
fully.
John Barrett,
American Minister.

The following was taken from the
Police Gazette.
Lafayette, Ind., Jan. 14. —
[Special,] —Since the announcement
of Coach Oliver F. Cutts that he
will not return to Purdue next year,
a number of prominent football
coaches have applied to the athletic
board for the position.
Herrnstein, the former Michigan
star, and “Pop” Golden, who has
coached the Pennsylvania State Col
lege eleven for the last five seasons,
are being favorably considered by
the athletic association, and a de
cision between the two will probably
be reached in a few days.
Herrnstein is still in the city await
ing an answer from the athletic
authorities. He played half back
on the Michigan eleven for two years
and coached the Haskell Indians
during the seasons 1503 and 19C4.
Last year his team defeated Ne
braska, placing Herrnstein among
the best coaches in the west.
Golden has turned out good
elevens at The Pennsylvania State Col
lege for the last five years. Krupp, a
player of reputation in the far west,
writes from Colorado that he would
like to co:chthe boilermakers, and
Victor Place, a former Dartmouth
player, has also put in an application-
Cutts has decided to locate in
Seattle Wash., to practice law.
