Any questions sent to the Editor of the STATE COLLEGIAN or dropped in the box at 323 Main will be an- Jj® swered in subsequent issues by experts in the jr subject about which information is desired.] ** Electrical Q. Why is it that when one alter nator runs as a synchronous motor it acts as a condenser and causes a lead of the current over the pressure, and thus causes a higher pressure at the motor than at the generator alter nator, besides causing a large current to flow, under certain adjustments of the field excitation. A. The pressure which drives the current through the motor armature is the resultant of the impressed and counter pressures. Since the synchronous motor must move at constant speed the counter pressure varies with the motor field excita tion. By drawing a diagram of the pressure it may be seen that with strong motor excitation the current must lead the impressed pressure. When the current is not in phase with the line pressure there must be a wattless element, as only when the current and pressure are in phase is all the current “active.” Mining Engineering Society. Thursday evening Dec. 15, the Senior and Junior Mining students met and organized the Mining Engi neering Society. The following of ficers were elected: President, F. A.
