—McKowen, former secretary of the University of California,
is at present serving a seven-year sentence in the pen. He ap
propriated $51,500 of the University funds to his own use. A
great amount was used up under head of pretended scholarships.
—Within the past year 5,000 volumes have been stolen from the
New York City public libraries. The different college librarians
report a great deal of this sort of thieving.
—The only volume of fiction in the library of the Navy De
partment at Washington is “The Man Without a Country,” by
Edward Everett Plale. Mr. Hale is now chaplain of the Senate.
—On March 21st, Mr. Eliot, president of Harvard, celebrated
his seventieth birthday. He has been president of that institution
